Moly-Coated or Standard?

Allright....all you experienced roll-your-own specialist....has anyone found distict advantages/disadvantages of utilizing moly-coated projectiles? I am currently loading standard Sierra 165 grain BTHP.308 projectiles, and utilizing 52 grains of IMR4350 to charge each case. My chrony gives me a ten shot average of 2,755 fps, and I am currently shooting benchrest groups of 1/2" MOA at 100 yds. Sierra makes the identical 165 gr BTHP with the moly coating, and I was just curious if utilizing this variant would be even better? I would assume that one would experience less barrel wear, but what about CUP Pressures? What about velocity? Help me out!

Using the same charge pressures will be lower and so will the velocities. I have heard about guys getting moisture trapped under the moly and it pitting their barrels. I can't say for sure if it will do that or not. I quit using moly bullets quite a while ago.

Ive heard the sme as above,if you have a 1/2 inch load I think Idcall it good right there,happily.

I talked to the guys at Nosler about this several years ago because they were changing over from moly to lubalox for the reasons stated above as well as the moly is extremely difficult to remove from the barrel. The lubalox has the same benefits without the drawbacks of the molybdenum based products.

back in the late 90's I istened to kevin thomas of sierra bullets say that he would never run a moly bullet thru any of his barrels. that stopped my interest in changing over to moly.

I've used Hornady 50gr. bullets moly/standard in my .22-250 and noticed the pressure is lower with the moly.I never chrono'd the moly,I just assumed the moly coating reduced friction,hence the lower pressure/my standard bullets chrono 3800+.Interesting!

they do reduce pressure and and can increase velocity but it's whether the negatives out weigh the positives which I believe they do.

I k now guys who strictly shoot moly and those who never do , and both are very successful.

are any manufacturers actually using molybdenum anymore or have they all gone to Lubalox? I know Nosler/Combined Technologies (Winchester) are using Lubalox but I don't know about the rest of the companies. You can't tell the difference to look at them they still have the black color and some guys don't know the difference so they just call it moly.
