Best group at 1,000 yards - 06/26/2012 10:49 PM

It is nice when you combine good quality components with good conditions.
All of these things came together for me this past weekend while shooting at 1,000 yards.
This is my best 5-shot group at 1,000 yards.
Eric Wallace (Nawakwa Accuracy) built this rig and it shoots and tracks like a dream.
Non-designated BAT action, 1-9 twist Bartlein barrel chambered in 7mm WSM, Nawakwa brake, Jewell trigger, Nawakwa bench stock (6” forend and 3” at the grip), Sightron S-III 8-32 with target dot, and I am using a prototype MAX Rest.
Winchester brass, Fed 210M's, H-1000, and 180 grain JLK's. Redding T-7 press and competition dies.
The 5-shot group was shot this past Saturday south of Sundance, WY at the 6th Annual MOA Cold Turkey Long Range Handgun Match at 1,000 yards and measured 3.8715 inches. http://www.moaguns.com/coldturkey.html
We have two classes in this match, and I shot this group during the Heavy Gun Class (Specialty Handgun weighing no more than 16 pounds and a barrel not exceeding 18”).
To say the least, I am a happy camper-Thank you to all who helped me accomplish this.

Yeah, ME! Actually I can probably shoot a 3 inch group with my Encores out to a couple hundred yards off the bi pod but my hands aint too steady anymore.

Last year in the Light Gun Class my 6.5-284 MOA Maximum with 15" barrel shot a 5-shot group measuring 5.25" at 1000 yards.

As far as I know for handgun--Yes!
I shot a 5.25 inch group last year with a 15 inch MOA Maximum in the light handgun class. I think Ray Prager has shot a 5.25" group as well with a SP similar to my 7mm WSM.

Just start sending him a little money each month and before you know it you would have the funds there.

Is anyone checking into it so it can be entered?

Re: Best group at 1,000 yards - 06/29/2012 11:34 PM

Since the MOA Match is seperate from any of the governing Long Range Shooting groups(NBRSA, IBS, and Pennsylvania), it will not be entered anywhere but in the MOA match site.
That is fine with me though. A nice group is a nice group.

That's a fact but I'd like to see you get the recognition for the accomplishment, you deserve it!

Re: Best group at 1,000 yards - 06/30/2012 12:36 AM

I appreciate the nice thought.
A lot of guys in the LR precision world know about it.
They also know I usually only shoot a LR BR match once a year.
I am more of a LR field shooter than a bench person.
Short range BR (100-300) has no interest for me.
Knowing I accomplished it, with the help of Aaron's spotting, regardless of whether there is any recognition or not is all that really matters. It also helped me showcase Eric's work and the other componenents/products I used.

Re: Best group at 1,000 yards - 07/04/2012 9:36 AM

That's awesome. My best group at a 1000 yds would consist of a really big piece of paper with no holes in it. Nice shootin'

Re: Best group at 1,000 yards - 07/04/2012 12:39 PM

Good question.
I have not really kept track.
I usually only shoot two shots or three for group, since it is the first couple of shots that really matter.
Probably sub half MOA.

Ernie, I can`t see beyond 100 yards so forget 1000. You guys are good....

Re: Best group at 1,000 yards - 07/05/2012 1:28 PM

With good optics I can take one of my SP's with just about anybody and have them popping steel between 400-500 yards off of a bipod and small pillow bag (Some out to 1200 yards in their first time shooting it if conditions are decent).
With my bench SP, it is even easier as it does not require as much skill to run it.
