30-30 versus 30 herret - 02/27/2013 5:07 PM
I had a 30 Herret 10 inch bull barrel but got rid of it due to not wanting to reload. My question is this: What kind of recoil or reaction does the contender have with the 30-30 compared to the 30 Herret? I think the 30 Herret is a better performance caliber but 30-30 is readily available. I shot the herret just fine and if the 30-30 is about the same then I am going that route for my next barrel.

If getting a 30-30 I'd go at least 12" to get a little more out of it, and help keep the muzzle down. Muzzle rise and blast with the short barrels is significant. I use a rifle scope on my 13" 7-30 Waters, don't even think of trying that with a 10.

I have both. I think that the recoil with the 30-30 is milder than the Herret. I think that would definitely be the case with factory loads.

If I were doing a 30-30 Contender, I would go with a 14" bbl.
The 30 Herrett in a 10" bbl is like icecream and apple pie. The 30-30 in a 14" bbl would be like icecream and apple pie.
The 30-30 would benefit from a longer barrel due to the larger case capacity. The added barrel length will allow it to perform nicely.
The 30-30 will have a bit more recoil than the 30 Herret due to larger case capacity and, with a longer barrel, it's slightly greater ballistic capability.

The Herret"s were designed for 10" barrels.

I prefer the 14" .30-30. I've had mine since 1978, and it won't be for sale in my lifetime.

Yes, yes and Yes... LOL!!!
Great comments Gents!!
I have a 10in and 15in 30 Herrett. The biggest difference,IMHO, is the 30-30 has a looooot more muzzle blast than the 30 Herrett. I cast and reload all mine anyway so it isn't a big deal for me.
All I can really say is this, they both have their place, each have their advantages, and YOU need to get which one fits your needs the best.

Why not want to reload? That is the only way to max the contender. Get the Herrett in 10" and reload, it is easy for the 30.
