New Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat

New Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat - 08/03/2013 1:59 AM

I just picked up my new Super Redhawk Toklat in 454 Casull today from Cabelas, & it looks very promising!

Its a Talo exclusive gun. Slab side 5" barrel with recessed crown, 2 complete sets of sights (1- express set, 1- standard ramp & notched rear), action locks up tight, grips feel good. It balances great. Ruger has done their homework with this one! I will try to shoot it this weekend and post the results.

I ordered one but haven't gotten it yet. I got the opportunity to handle a prototype a while back and was happy to see Ruger offer the SRH with a shorter barrel that wasn't a snubnose (I still love the Alaskan!). Awesome piece, 240!

I bought this with the idea of running strong 45 LC & watered down 454 Casull threw it, same as the Alaskan. I have a bunch of Starline 45 LC brass and a couple boxes of the Winchester 454 factory ammo (silver box w/ XTP's), to start with. Honestly, I admire those of you who hunt Alaska & Africa for the really big dangerous critters but don't think I will be able to acomplish either. The .45 LC is probally all I will ever need for my stomping grounds.

240,

Looks like it will be fun. Asthetically, it does not flip my switch at all, but I do not like the looks of many of the S&W Performance center guns either. Traditionalist here, I guess ;^)

But, the size and barrel length is great. The Alaskan is too short in many states to be a legal hunting gun, and 4.5-5 inches of barrel is plenty to make a hot Colt or Casull plenty effective. Great call on Ruger's part (or Talo).

Not quite sure from your post if you are actually reloading for the Casull yet, but it is as easy to make Colt level loads in Casull cases. It would get your bullets a little closer to the throats and possibly be a little more accurate across the boards.

So, ya gotcha ya a scope picked out yet :^)

Wildwestguns of Alaska offered a SRH conversion that is very close to the Toklot. Barrel length was your choice between 3"-5".
Ruger is a really great gun company to offer this version of their SRH. Plus the cost of Rugers gun is much better then WWG`s price of $1499. That was in 2007... The Toklot is pretty much what JDJones described as his Alaskan carry gun... The Toklot is one interesting handgun.....

Bearbait,
I agree with on the looks of the SRH, I never was a fan of the intergrated scope mounts & how the barrel dia. steps down in size from the reciever, but it a trade off for the trigger, caliber, & heavy duty construction, and swing out cylinder. I've got a Ultra Match Dot or an Aimpoint R1 laying here that might make there way on the Toklat, but I haven't ruled out open sights. I do reload, but no 454's yet. Im waiting for Starline brass.

James,
I seen WWG's Wolverine conversion and it looks identical except for the WWG porting. Magnaport has the "Advantage" conversion too, similar but they don't slab side the barrel. I really like JD'd beast conversion ... the barrel contour is matched to the reciever.
I think Ruger is doing a pretty good job trying to offer people what they want by finding ways to reinvent their products with some variaty. However, the cries for a 5 shot SBH Bisley in 480 Ruger with a banded 5" barrel remain to be answered!

Different strokes for different folks. I can not get past the frame to barrel step down. But it looks like it would pack wonderfully.

Folks either love or hate Super Redhawks, but it doesn't change the fact that they are great revolvers. Stronger than they need to be, typically accurate, and a pretty good bargain. They are pretty compact when you cut the barrel back a bit. Glad that Ruger made these.

Re: New Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat - 08/05/2013 2:34 PM

240,

I agree on the compromise. last year I got the bug to do the buy both the Alaskan and a Redhawk and try the cylinder swap, just to get a double action 454 of reasonable size. I dearly love my FA gun, but always thought a double action revolver would make a more logical back-up/carry gun. The gun craze pretty much put that thought on hold.

I've got my FA 4 3/4 set up for irons on a trimmed SSK scope base, so I can also do a red dot or a scope. I do like the flexibility to switch around. I do have the Ruger factory mount system on a MKII, and while I prefer the Leupold QWR rings, the Ruger system does work very well, and is resonably clean. I was wondering when I saw your pictures if you could get a micro red dot onto a Ruger. Perhaps mill the lower half of a Ruger ring flat to accept a sight?

Thanks for all of the pictures on the bragging board. And do let us know how things go/went at the range.

Bearbait,
I seen your modified SSK base on the FA 83... thats slick, I have a similar set-up but unfortunatly no rear sight.

Well, I tried to mount the Ultra Match Dot 30mm red this morning... it won't fit between the factory ruger mounts. Im going to order a Jack Weigand base. The down side is giving up the rear sight. I threw a 2x Leupold on the gun just for giggles ... I may leave it on the gun just long enough for a trip to the range. I went to the range last weekend with my father-in-law but was persuaded to just take Rimfire rifles. If we take too many guns to the public range it becomes a race to try and shoot everything before it gets too crowded, or you wait forever to change targets. I plan on heading out this week sometime by myself with nothing but 454's & 45 LC on my mind. Will keep you all posted on the results.

The regular UD 30 will fit just fine. I'm not a fan of having any more links in the chain than necessary, and that Weigand mount that fits the Ruger ringmount crescents has been known to move under heavy recoil.

Re: New Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat - 08/05/2013 5:35 PM

I had to modify one of my Leupold rings to get my Leupy 2X onto my modified FA base. In my case, I had to ever so slightly radius the bottom aft ring to clear a squared up area on the scope turret housing. If the UMD only needs a little more room, perhaps a ring mod?

And hey, you are a better man than me. At least you made the range last weekend. I got completely derailed, and was bummed as I fitted a v-notch rear to my sight base, and was anxious to try it out with a brass bead and fiber optic front.

I could have saved you the touble on that one! The Ultradot 30 fits perfectly between the rings. I like the fact that the rings attach directly to the frame on the SRH, not requiring a base of any type. I had a base recently fail on my Bisley Hunter.

That's a good looking hammer! Congratulations!

Kinda reminds me of Whit's Linebaugh conversion on the SRH, with slab-sided barrel as opposed to fluted.

Bearbait, I took a measurement, no way to modify the Ruger rings...Match dot is almost a half inch too long for the spacing.

Whit, Was it a Weigand base that let you down?

Dur, ... thanks man!

I see Weigand makes another base for the SRH 454 & 480 that uses the rear sight hole as an extra anchor, the SHR .44 Mag version does not. I wonder if the improved base is suficiant?
