When I bought my contender everyone said buying barrels was addictive, well I am hooked. Started with a 44 mag,had to have a 22 match and a 223 then a 45/410,then a 357max,30/30, Well maybe one more? I would like a big straight wall for hogs and Elk. Would you use a 375win on elk or a 45/70.

TC,

It might help to know how you feel about cast lead bullets. If you like cast, I think the 45-70 would give you a lot more options. My only experience with the 375 in a Contender was with a 375 JDJ, and while there were a goodly number of jacketed bullets that were good choices, I still think there would be even more jacketed choices for the 45-70.

You will end up with both before the disease runs it's course, so I would choose the 45/70 as the first one to purchase. I have 2 375 JDJ's and a 45/70 barrel, all 14 inchers, and the 45/70 seems to get shot more than the other two.

LOL, then you will sell them all just to replace them all, and a couple more, a few years later.

I even sold 90% of my barrels just to buy custom brand maker XXX barrels. Today, most of my barrels are TC Custom Shop barrels.

I am somewhere in that cycle right now. I just ordered 2 SSK barrels and 1 from Gary Reeder. This comes after selling 3 T/C brand barrels at the recent gun shows. I went from Contenders to revolvers, to rifles, back to revolvers, and now back to Contenders. Vicious cycle.

I like the 375 Win. I do not own one, but I have a friend that shoots that caliber in his contender. He has used it on deer sized animals in Texas and also in Africa. It is quite effective out to 200 yds. I have another friend that chose that caliber for a FA single shot for his wife. She shoots it very well & has taken several deer with it.

You really should have them both.
