opinions on a savage striker?

I found a savage striker in 308, with a 14" barrel. In good condition, what would it be worth, and do any of Y'all recommend the striker platform? The few savage rifles I've had, have all been of good quality, and very accurate. Would that hold true for the striker platform as well? Thanks in advance for any opinions, and info on this.

The Striker is a good platform. The handle on the factory stock was too fat for me, but after a bit of grinding I made it work. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for one, and even that is too much IMO unless NIB.

I have a love-hate relationship with Strikers. I love that they are a very accurate bolt action handgun. I hate that they are "chubby"....they have a tall vertical profile when compared to other single shot handgun, even other bolt actions. They are also wider than the others. I've taken all the ones I've had and swapped barrel, triggers, stock, mod'd the heck out of them but eventually fall out of love and sell them......and always end up with another XP-100.

My safe tells the tale..........eight XP-100's and one Striker...and I've even thought of selling it.

I feel so awkward that I have 8 Strikers, and no XP's.

But I have no Strikers with the factory plastic grip. It's not bad, but needs work to be good. I'd rather make a nice fancy wood stock, it more fun. For hunting, I would mod a factory stock so I'm not self conscious about scratching up all my hard work.

Oh, and if you're right handed, it is easier to operate.

The fly in the ointment with a striker is the trigger linkage. But you can do some work on them as a center grip and make them much better. Then shoot it a lot so you get to know the trigger, or convert to a rear grip and have a number of real good trigger options. I have a striker 516 in 308 and 22-250 and am very happy with both.

The guy wants 650 for the striker, in 308 and a extra 243 barrel. Maybe I'll just hold out for something else.

Too much money. Barrels go for about $50. I've seen them sell for that and more on G-Bro but I won't pay it.

From what I'm reading here, I'll hold out for a better deal, on a better pistol.

Heck....I'd sell you a custom .260R Striker for that money!

I'm with Dan as for the money you could move into the semi-custom/custom Striker realm. I bought a lightly used semi-custom Striker from a guy for $650 with a 20" heavy stainless McGowan barrel on it and the only reason I still own it is because it's the most accurate gun I've ever fired (and has practically no utility for anything other than bench shooting or hunting from a box blind.) I also had one of the Super Strikers in .308 that was all factory original with the on/off muzzle break and laminated stock, and wasn't impressed with the stock/grip or how it shot so it went down the road shortly after I bought it...

Paid 450.00 for mine and that included a 2 x leopold scope.

Strikers typicaly dominate bench rest pistol compitition at the local club vs the XP100s. I am friends with several of the striker crowd. Most of them started with XPs and went to strikers. Personaly I have never shot one. reflex264

I have one Striker with 3 barrels for it. .243 , .308 , and a .270. I love the Striker and wouldn't sell it for anything less then a grand, that is what it would take to get me to turn loose of it. Not that it is worth that much. I think I paid $425. for it. I have.the.factory stock on it and it works fine for me. It's just not all that pretty. I use it for hunting and ringing steel with it. Don't pass upon one if you can get a good price on it. You'll love.it and they are very accurate.
And being able to swap barrels in a few minutes is pretty outstanding too!
XP-100's are single shots where as Strikers can carry one to 2 back up rounds for hunting. Great handguns once you adjust the trigger right.

I got my first handgun deer with a Sriker in 308 Win,it was very accurate and I didnt mind the factory stock,traded it for a revolver since I enjoy them more.Oh ya I shot a coyote with a 125 gr BST too,that was fun,heres apart theres the other half.Like Rod said I wouldnt pay 650.00 for it tho.

So far I haven't got anything with my Striker. I used it the last 2 years for elk but came up empty. I love shooting my revolvers and have gotten a small buck, a large blk. bear, and a badger with them so far. But I'll keep trying for long range.coyotes with the Striker as well as steel and paper.

I love my Striker and Savage target action pistols. They are extremely accurate and I use mine to compete in 1000yd steel shoots against rifles. Although I have never won a match outright I did finish second once last year in a field of 77 shooters. This year I plan on making another run at the rifle shooters.

I have one in .308 and really like it .I have killed several deer with the 165 grn.Sierra game king bullet ,it also shoots excelent with the 130 gr Speer hp.I did have to trim the stock where it hit my thumb but that was minor.With the adjustable brake[on off] it is one of my easiest shooting s.p. My wife and grandsons love it for steel and it is the one I use to introduce new shooters to long range shooting.

I had posted that I had one in 308 win earlier and I found it to be an easy shooting gun,some time later I got the bug and got a 308 Encore pistol with a 15 inch barrel,with the big rear grip I found it to be the most beligerent hand gun I fired,all kinds of chaos when that thing went off.Id rather shoot 20 rds from the 475 L BFR I had than 5 from that 308 Encore.I know many of you use them to excellent effect and hats off to you.
