.45 colt +p load

.45 colt +p load - 11/17/2014 4:04 PM

I was chronographing some loads last week and thought some would be interested in the results.I had put together a load for the Casull with a Lee 300 flatpoint with 26.2 gr of H110/W296 and using the same bullet in mag tech brass for the .45 colt using 24.0 grains of H110/W296.The .45 colt plus p load MUST be used in strong sixguns i.e.Super redhawk, blackhawk, freedom arms,contender-this is stated in the reloading manuals as well but anyway the chrono showed an average from the .45 colt load at almost 1400 f.p.s. and then I chrono'd the casull loads and with 2.2 more powder ,the results were the same,...right around 1400 f.p.s. average. The data for this load is on Hodgdon's site but the 24.0 grain powder charge is listed under a 335 gr. wfn and mine average 307 grains for the Lee cast bullet,...anyway,thats quite a potent hunting load for the .45 colt for anyone interested in the Lee bullet with that powder charge, but remember ,ONLY in guns as strong as the redhawks ,freedom arms, contender, encore should be used.the primers used ,in the casull rounds were C.C.I. 400 small rifle ,in the colt loads,Federal large pistol.

Interesting. I've about decided to go the .45LC route rather than the .454 because of data I've found such as yours. A 300 grain hot load will take care of anything I'll run up against in Arkansas.

yep, thats why I posted ,because of getting the same power in .45 colt cases and saving 2.2 grains of powder by not using the loads in casull cases.I was kinda surprised because I figured I'd be in the 1200's with the colt case but the chrono tells the truth,...all cases(.45 colt) slid out without problems ,the primers were not flattened, didn't really show signs of too high a pressure,...but I think I have my load for my casull using this Lee 300 gr.cast bullet(.45 colt),...I shot off a rest standing and the .45 colt rounds were grouping 1 1/2 inces at 35 yards ,plenty of accuracy,....john

My blackhawk with 22 gr 296 under cast performance 335 WLNGC will do 1300 fps over a crono. I put this load together for a trip to alaska as a backup. It is a hard kicker but even my wife put 2 shots about 2" at 30 yards just to prove she could use it if she really needed to !

My favorite 45 +P is 23 gr H110 under a 300 LBTWFN. It does 1300 in my 5.5" Ruger Bisley. I sold my 454 and replaced it with a 475 L for things that really need killin'.

Lotsa reasons for the op's observations. Number one is the colt brass has mich less case capacity. I noticed this on some 500 jrh brass from diff manufacturers. The cases with thicker webbing at the casehead would buildup pressuremore at a lighter load and even sometimes exclipse the other in velocity. Ya see this a ton with 480 vs 475l loads. On the lighter end of the spectrum the case with the smaller capacity has the higher velocity in many instances. Try and run the 45 colt with a 340 to greater than 1700 fps. The casull wins that race. Also the best revolvers imho like the bfr, the srh, and the fa are all 454's and stronger than a blackhawk so what ya can do with them is very very different on the high end

you make a lot of sense but don't try and confuse us with facts.

one source of reloading info showed a load with the 300 wfn a couple grains higher than what I tried,...I'm not willing to go any higher as the Colt brass is not as thick as .44 mag or .454 casull brass and what I loaded was the limit for me and I felt comfortable because I was shooting the load out of my Super Redhawk.454 Casull-plenty of strength.

24 gr of W296 under a 325 LFNGC by Bryan Pierce is my heavy hitter
