.454 Mag Tech

.454 Mag Tech - 12/02/2014 9:35 PM

I have a FA .454 and I'm having trouble with the cases sticking in the cylinder. I haven't had it long enough to try different ammo in it but the trouble is with the Mag Tech brand factory ammo, I never had any trouble with there ammo before so I don't know if it's the cylinder or the ammo,I'm going to try a different brand when I have time but I was just wondering if anyone else had this trouble. I cleaned the chambers on the cylinder and that didn't seem to help

FA's cylinders are tight tolerances. All of mine require ejector rod to remove cases; they won't just fall out. This goes for every caliber I own. I don't know to what extent your cases are sticking, so....

I've shot mag-techs 260 gr 454 casull loads in mine and they extracted no different from my handloads.

well I had to take the cylinder out and use a drift to knock them out! I have a .475 FA also and have never had trouble like that, it really suprised me that happend it was in 2 chambers. They only came out about 1/2 inch and then I had to drive them out the rest of the way

That seems a bit over the top for sure; I would contact Magtech and see if anyone else has reported that trouble. They are probably going to ask you for the Lot Number which should be somewhere on the box; maybe on the back side of the end flaps.

Wow! I haven't had to use a hammer and dial. Something is surely not to par.

I wasn't sure if you were new to FA's or not; so I started with elementary tips.

Did you have any oil in the chambers??? That will cause what you are describing....

Ryan,

Did you shoot any 45 Colts in those chambers prior to the 454 C cartridges? An obvious issue I'm sure you thought about; however, sometimes missed.

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/03/2014 2:15 PM

I did fire a few .45 Colt's through it when I first got it and then I cleaned the heck out of the cylinder before I shot the Magtechs so that's why I'm lost on this deal. I'm going to clean it up again and try the Federal ammo and if it doesn't change I'll be giving Freedom Arms a call. I bought the gun used and it's in really nice shape and it is a Premier Grade

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/03/2014 9:29 PM

that's kinda why I wanted to try some other ammo first before I did anything else, I've shot quite a bit of Magtech over the years and never had any trouble so maybe I just got a hold of a bad lot or something, A guy suggested earlier that I call Magtech and check the lot number with them. I bought about 5 boxes of the stuff at a store that was closing here in OKC about 2 months ago so I can't take it back now!

I use mag tech brass all the time for my Casull and .500 S & W mag.Encore.I know Mag Tech loads em to max on the factory loads,my lot ,back in 2000 was pushing 1860 f.p.s. with a 260 s.p. out of my 7 1/2 SRH and I never had issues.I would call mag tech and see what they have to say could've had some hotter lots go out ,ya never know.

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/04/2014 3:36 AM

It's been years since I've fired a .454 but the recoil with these loads is all there I noticed! They may be extra hot I really can't say but it seems to have quite a bit sharper recoil than my 6 inch FA .475 does with the factory 400 grain Hornady loads

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/26/2014 3:27 PM

Went out and ran some Federal .454 ammo through my FA yesterday and everything went great so it's the Magtech ammo so I think I'll try to email them with the lot number and see what they say about it, it is way over pressure from what I can tell

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/27/2014 2:46 AM

It may be too hot in your gun and I've had some issues with Magtech in the past too. You might check the case length to see if it's in spec. That's the fired cases...

Good news Ryan! Let us know what Magtech says in response

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/27/2014 5:38 PM

We are constantly reminded that all guns are different and what works in one is not good for all. It will be interesting to see what Magtech has to say on the matter. I had trouble with some Hornady 6.5 Caricano ammo being too hot and they sent me two boxes of non Hornady ammo for my trouble. That kind of service was much appreciated by me.

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/28/2014 1:38 AM

I'm going to call them Monday and tell them everything so we'll see just what they say, I've got 8 boxes of the stuff all with the same lot number and I'm not going to fire anymore of it through my gun so I hope I can ship it back to them and trade it out with some from another lot. I've shot quite alot of Magtech in my .44 and my Redhawk .454 and never had any kind of trouble with there products so I think I just got a bad lot

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 12/28/2014 1:53 AM

Hopefully they will stand behind there product and make it right as they should.

Its good to see they made it right by you. Any company can have a bad product get out ,the good ones stand behind there products and make things right.

Re: .454 Mag Tech - 02/12/2015 2:17 AM

I don't know if they will actually break the ammo down to see what the problem was or not, I think the place I sent the ammo back to was in Minnesota and it's actually loaded in Brazil I think so who knows? I would kinda like to know what they found
