Anyone missing a 5 shot cylinder in 475?

Anyone missing a 5 shot cylinder in 475? - 03/11/2015 8:43 PM

I know it's a weird question but I aquired a 5 shot 475 Linebaugh cylinder. I'm just trying to figure how a custom 5 shot cylinder got separated from its frame. If the gun blew up the cylinder should have gotten damaged. The cylinder has a single small number stamped in the case head end. Other than that it has a nice finish except for the dragline I have no other info on the part.

If it's for a Super Redhawk I'm sure it was intended for me!!!!! I would be more than happy to arrange the shipping :-)

Is there anyway to find out who made it or what model it was intended for?

You might send a pic of it to Whitworth. He's probably one of the best around here at identifying stuff like that. He's had them all.... As a matter of fact some say he "Wrote the book on big bore hunting revolvers" :-)

Funny you mention that. I received his Big Bore Revolver Book yesterday in the mail that I bought from Amazon. So far it seems very well written and great pictures too. I believe there is a picture in there of one of my old 475l FA revolvers that I sold to Gary. Small world. I'll try to link the picture but it has never worked for me.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I can't see from the picture, but are the holes counter-bored? I need a couple of measurements -- length and diameter of the cylinder. Let's see if we can unlock this mystery! Thank you!

Definitely not from a SRH, Vance.

Nope. Single action :-(
Ah well. I can load the 480 up to pretty uncomfortable levels! Truth is 400-410s at 1200fps suite me just fine :-)

That "ballistic" level should get you home in good shape if the correct bullet and placement takes place.

Right now it's the LNFP from the Lee mold. I believe they are 400gr. I do feel confident with it at any prudent range for moose or brown bear.

1.779 in diameter and 1.799 in length. And not counter bored.

comparing it to the cylinder on the new to me 475L from John; it may be one of his. It has the same plum colored bluing and has a number stamped on the cylinder that matches the stamped number on the frame. It has the #7 stamped on the cylinder. I wonder if anyone on here ever owned the #7- 475L by John Linebaugh.

My question is how in blazes did a JL crafted cylinder find its way apart from the gun it was built for? It's not like a 5 shot 475L cylinder is a "stock part" anywhere, and is certainly not something someone would just forget about when selling a gun....like so many Single Six 22 mag cylinders.

I wonder if it was a police confiscation or something like that, where the frame was destroyed and the parts scavenged. That would be a serious shame if that were the case.

Yes. I don't know. It's weird. I May call john sometime and see if his records indicate who he made the gun for.

It's definitely a custom.
