American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/09/2015 4:08 PM

Ruger has finally listened to big bore revolver fans and is now offering a Bisley Super Blackhawk in the .454Casull and .480Ruger chamberings!!! Both guns will have five shot cylinders of Carpenter Custom 465 stainless steel with recessed case heads. They will have 6 1/2" barrels and the long ejector from the 10" Super Blackhawk and Hunter models. They are a distributor special, only available only through Lipsey's. Read more about it below:

We were just talking about the new mystery chambering from Lipseys. Glad they took the plunge. It's long overdue.

Would love too...and I think it would be great.

But....

The cyl pin and ejector rod are in the way and no good way to get around them.

Nope, I want someone to explain to me what would be gained by installing a 12" barrel and a goofy looking aluminum shroud on this sixgun. Another 200yd deer gun for those who carry portable shooting rests in the field?

As I said on the board, Ruger sent me a survey a few years ago and the last question was "what would you like to see made by Ruger" and my answer was a 5 shot Bisly in 480. I`am sure a few thousand other handgun hunters said the same thing. Good for Ruger.....

Oft times......"because I can".....is a valid reason.

What would be gained by me buying this new Ruger? I'd have a new gun. Do I need it? Nope. Do I want it? Yep. Why? Because I can.

List is $969 that would put store cost in the $725 range.

I am going to try to pick up a 480

My LGS called Lipsey's today. They said the first batch of Casull revolvers was sold out and that the .480s supposedly hadn't arrived yet.

They put a Casull on backorder for me.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/11/2015 2:32 PM

I don't need another gun, especially a handgun. For all intents and purposes shooting Arkansas deer and hogs my Bisley in 45 colt works amiably. That 480 Ruger calls out to me. I don't need it but when a used one pops up for sale for $550 it will probably find a loving home.

I have a custom 44 that I need to practice more with.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/12/2015 2:57 AM

Glad to see both calibers come out in a Bisley, I thought the old story was that the Blackhawk frame couldn't handle Casull pressure and thats why they went with the Redhawk, you can sure tell there's different management at Ruger these days!
Posted By: 98Redline

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/12/2015 12:26 PM

It wasn't the frame that was the issue, it was the cylinder. Ruger could not produce a 6 hole cylinder that would handle the pressure of the 454 given the standard alloy and diameter. By going to a 5 hole, they have essentially done what the custom smiths have been doing for years to make their big boomers.

Good on Ruger, this combination I am sure is going to sell out in a hurry as it now provides a real alternative to a custom big bore conversion or a BFR.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/12/2015 12:30 PM

Actually, for a long time Ruger felt the frame wasn't up to the task. However, they reevaluated and tested, and here we are!

Yup. Killed it last Saturday with the .454 Bisley. The sight mount is by Weigand and is a no drill, no tap variety. I mounted an Ultradot 4 with Weaver rings on it.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/12/2015 11:50 PM

I'd really like to have one in 454, as I already own a 480, but I truly don't think a person could do any better than a 480 in a Bisley. It's a beautiful gun in a very capable chambering.

I should sell a few long guns and buy one, but as my buddy said, "Never sell a gun to buy a gun." It's tempting though.

I ordered a 480 I don't know who said 2 months but mine said 6 months plus.

We will see if it ever shows up.

Until then I have a couple 45's that might work.

May have to buy a Franken Ruger so I can shoot 240 gr bullets at prairie dogs at 600 yards -- 55 gr bullets from a .223 just won't kill one dead enough these days.

So Max, you played with both in .480 and .454. Any personal preference for one ? Also wonder how they compare to the BFR ?

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/14/2015 12:38 PM

Dropped by a gun shop I frequent while making my rounds in the panhandle and NW Oklahoma. They had one of the new Ruger Bisley 454 five shots in there laying on the counter for all to handle. It felt great in the hand as soon as I picked It up.
He has some of the 480 Rugers on the way also.
This one was marked 805.00, new, plus tax.
I gave him my card and asked him to call me as soon as one of the 480's hit the door. He said he expects them in about 2 weeks.
Very nice pistol.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/18/2015 3:16 AM

Ok guys, a few questions. Why is the bisley grip the only one deemed appropriate? I've never shot one. How does the Ruger compare to the BFR? What would you like to see in future models? Nothing wrong with this one, just wondering what may be coming next.
I want in 454 Casull and a 7 1/2 inch Hunter model. Maybe with see thru rings and fiber optic sights. Am I asking too much? I can't afford one right now, to many irons in the fire.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/18/2015 9:49 AM

To control recoil, you will find few that prefer the "plow handle" (for lack of qa better term) to the Bisley. Lots of Bisley shooters complain about getting their middle knuckle rapped by the trigger guard, but the vertical profile brings recoil back into your hand more like a double-action instead of a propensity to roll up like a plow handle. Hence the Bisley was the chosen grip frame on these two new models.

I don't know if Ruger will want anyone to hang an optic on the barrel of a .454. Keep in mind the operating pressure of the Casull and even the .480 relative to the .44 Magnum. I don't know if a Hunter model will ever come about.

How do they compare to a BFR? Lighter and more svelte. Both of mine are very accurate I might add.

I am pretty certain it won't. Weigand said that the Ruger ringmount system wouldn't hold a scope on a Casull for even 10 shots. Ruger asked them to design a scope mount that would work, and you can see it on Max's gun. They have no intention of coming out with a Hunter model.

Re: American Hunter First Look new Ruger .454 and .480 - 08/19/2015 3:17 PM

I see a success story here. This should make a great bear woods packing revolver. I am a big 480 Ruger fan, and I may have to add one to my herd. This one should be W-A-Y more packable than a Super RedHawk.
