Ruger Rings

I just purchased a used 7.5" SRH in .480 ruger and proceeded to order a Ultra dot to go one it. My question is about the ruger supplied rings, I've heard mixed reviews on them holding up. Just wondering if I'll be fine with them on the .480 or should i go to a weigand rail mount?

Shot my .454 Super Red for many years with Ruger rings and 2-6 Bushnell Elite. Never had any problems.

My ultradot came with the rings and i monted it to my 480 srh on a weigand base. I have 500 rds so far of 340 gr cast and still holding true. Cant answer to the rings as i was warned to go with weigand base from the beginning. Make sure if you do order a weigand base to order purple locktite if you dont have any. As per Jack himself. .. he doest recommend blue lock tite on the base screws. I spent a few days looking for purple locktite had to order it from a vender through work.

I personally think that for the application there is no better ring.

Ruger rings are excellent, but I do a bit of work on mine. I knock off the inside edges where the rings join, and lap the rings. This gives them full contact with the scope. If the rings are a little loose, line them with Dymo label tape. Sort of like a poor man's Signature ring.

Ya I agree, Ruger rings can be a bit rough on scopes unless you work them over a bit. It really helps to keep the scope from moving.

Thx guys yea I figure ill check the rings out before mounting. Ive had several people sh they use rubber cement to line the rings

I started with Ruger Rings. I now have the 480 Weigand Combat base on mine using the UltraDot Rings.
I have had the Ruger rings shoot loose. I have had no issues at all since switching to the Weigand Base. I have the Heavy recoil model that requires removal of the rear sight, not the 44 Magnum version.

By the way, you will love the 480 SRH. Reload for it, and you will be a happy camper. I normally keep mine a couple grains under Full House Maximum Loads. I shoot 375 WFNGC cast bullets in mine cast in a Mountain Mold. I have never fired a factory round through my 480, and I have not missed a thing. It loves cast bullets.

Thanks for the info. I plan to eventually get me a set of dies for the .480 if not just to save on ammo and actually stock up on more of it. I got everything mounted today and took it out to the range. I ran 30 rounds of the hornady 325 xtps through it without anything coming loose today. Im really liking it so far. Only shot out to 50 yrds but I was able by the end to hold my groups in a 5" circle. I didn't think that was bad seeing how I've never shot anything more than a factory .44 power load. Ready to get out there send some more down range already!!

I ended up using the Weigand mount on my SHR .480 Ruger, as well. But the reason I did it was that with the Ruger factory 30mm rings and the 30mm UltraDot, the adjustment "saddle" on the UltraDot put the rings ever so slightly too far apart to mount in the factory SRH cuts. The Weigand mount requires the removal of the rear sight but I won't use the revolver w/o the UltraDot anyway.

I have used Ruger's 30mm rings and Ultradot 30s on numerous SRHs for close to a decade and it is a combination that in my opinion is works perfectly -- as it it was intended by the manufacturers of the various components. I can't imagine what trouble you might have had. I think having a direct mount to the handgun's frame is a good thing over a mount. JMHO.

I agree. More links in the chain means more chance of failure. I have seen pics of the Weigand adaptors with the locator pins being bent as the mount moved. They rectified this issue I believe with the screw in the rear sight base hole on the ones that mount over the receiver, but I would still prefer the factory offering.

Must have just been a build up of tolerances in the two rings and the scope for me then because they would not work together.
