Thinking about selling my 44 mag

Ok, first I must admit that I change guns and outdoor equipment like women change shoes lol

I'm not really "unhappy" with my 44 mag but I'm not "content". I just feel that it would be a lot more fun having a semi auto. for me, handgun hunting is fun because is all about getting close (a lot like bow hunting) and I have decided that I do not want to use a scope or red dot and don't really care to shoot past 50 yards. I seriously doubt that I will ever be hunting elk and whitetail is about as big as I might ever hunt.

I don't have the budget right now to add to my collection, so if I want to make a move I have to either sell or trade.

thinking of either getting a 45 acp or a 10mm, I know the 10mm will have the edge for hunting but from another thread it seems the 45 acp is up for the task also. Bottom line is I want a fun semi auto dual purpose gun, iron sights. thinking either a standard glock or 1911.

Opinions or suggestions?

Rod, my ears are still wet on a lot of hand guns. whats a 45 super? a 45 acp that's chamber is lengthened?

Same case length, just stronger brass and a stiffer recoil spring. The 460 Rowland uses a slightly longer case and is even more powerful.

Sam 86 If you are going to shoot the Super, especially in a 1911 it would be better to change the springs in the gun. Loaded correct the 45 ACP will do a lot. There was a guy on Youtube that shot an Elk with one. The gamut runs from a 500 dollar Rock Island arms pistol which is good, all the way to a full blown custom for thousands 3-5K The super is a good round, and if you went to the Rowland it would be best to go with a brake also. A lot of recoil on that one. The 45 ACP can be tailored from mild loads to the +P rounds. There again if the +P rounds are going to be used all the time then it is best to change the springs in the 1911 and some suggest using a buffer also. No brake needed
The 10 MM is a good round and it shoots much flatter. But the limit is about a 180 grain bullet. Not saying that is bad,,, Just saying FYI... I think Kimber has a 6" barrel, and I know that Rock Island has one, in the 10MM
One more thing to consider is the possibility of one of the single action guns with a 45 ACP cylinder. I have one that shoots the 45 Colt and a extra cylinder for the 45 ACP. Most times (not always) a single action such as that is more accurate. Ruger makes a convertible in the 5.5 barrel, that you can customize, if you so desired.

For 1911s its the Rock Island, Kimber, Night Hawk, and a custom. This is range of price, and quality comparison. This list is not for stirring a pot, or my personal preferences.

Don't sell the .44! Get your auto, but keep the .44. Get rid of it and you'll be kicking yourself later. At least that's what happens to me. Besides who knows what'll happen once hillary takes charge.

Buy the Glock 10mm of your choice. Since you don't desire optics, I'd suggest a standard Glock 20, KKM 6" barrel, and Dawson Precision adjustable sights.

Unfortunently it is not in the budget to buy another gun, so I have to sell or trade. I'm not really apprehensive to let the 44 go.

Before I bought the 44 this was my plan but I was sold on a 10mm but I decided to try the 44 mag because "it's the best tool for the job" but now I'm back to my original idea

I just read up on the 460 Rowland, I can get a 6" 460 barrel from lone wolf for $150 for a glock 21... feel like im going to get my cake and eat it too...

Awesome, so the barrel is the only upgrade no springs etc? I have been wanting a glock 20 but may have to rethink this.

just did a little research. you will need a 460 barrel (highly recommended to have a muzzle brake) and new spring. I may not even really do this but it's cool to know that I can have 44 mag power in a glock with 13+1

How about the Glock model 40 in 10mm? Seems that would be one way to go without having to tinker with modifying an existing gun and dealing with any potential functioning issues you are likely to have with the 45 Super or 460 Roland conversions.

The 10mm Auto is a fine round, and one of my favorites. My own 10mm Glock has taken one deer and one hog using Hornady 180 XTP factory loads.

I don't have the model 40 (I have a smaller Glock) but it's certainly on my list of guns to consider getting.

I would be ok with a 10mm if I could find one for the right price.

Which 44 are you using currently?

it's a ruger super Blackhawk, 7.5" barrel. I have the original grips and pacmyer grips. light holster wear and there are some scratches on the extractor rod housing. Pics are in the bragging board from when I bought it. I have some ammo and startline brass and a lee carbide die set too.

Sell it and hunt with what makes you happy. I have not found the 45acp to be lacking in any department if you use it within parameters. Ammunition is abundant and not super expexpensive so go for it.

well I did it, sold it yesterday. still have about 50 new unloaded startline bass cases and the 3 piece Lee carbide die set.

the 44 was fun, but wasn't exactly what I am looking for.

Glocks just don't work for me, but I may consider an XD 45 too.

I just sold a Glock 20. It was fun and accurate and I killed one deer with it. My personal limit was about 45 yards. I like an optic in low light conditions. I never tried it on game but had good accuracy with 200 grain xtp. One good thing about 45 super is you can shoot standard 45 acp ammo through it plinking though you may have to change the recoil spring. With the Glock in 10mm you can buy a .40 barrel for it and shoot 40 or 10mm with just swapping the barrel. I said if I had it to do again I'd go 45 just for ammo availability but then after that I bought a bisley hunter in 41 mag.

A 45 Super setup properly will also shoot 45 ACP interchanably. And is higher on the food chain than the 10mm in my experience.

45 Super 230 XTP on the left, 180 XTP on the right. The 10mm velocity was 1300 plus the 45 Super was 1130 FPS. Both penetrated nearly the same but the Super made a larger hole.
