Anybody have a Ruger SRH Alaskan?

And specifically the .454 Casull flavor?

But, I'll gladly hear thoughts on the .44 Mag version as well.

Kinda sorta interested in the .454 Casull for the ability to load Colt or Casull loads in it. A dual purpose romp'em/stomp'em gun.

Thoughts?

Had a .480 and it was a great revolver.

Ive had all of them and i prefer the 454 and its myriad of both factory loads and available bullets but i feel the 44 is adequate but i love my 325 gr barnes busters ripping out of it faster than factory 240's out of a 44 mag

Were you able to still generate acceptable velocities even with the snub barrel?

I was initially reluctant to get this one because I HATE the Hogue grips that come with it. The whole Hogue design, wood or rubber just kills the purpose of the gun for me. That being compact. The Hogue grips are Huge.........and butt ugly.

But, now that I've handled the Eagle Grips available for the SRH........

....I think there is a chance the Alaskan can still be somewhat portable and "compact" for the Beast that it is.

Imagine the Alaskan looking somewhat like this with the Eagle Grips.

I always thought it looked mean as is. Neat little gun. I'll have to dig up my chronograph results -- actually, I think they're in my Ruger book.

I have one in 454. i love it for what it is capable of doing with heavy loads. i recently started load development for hunting with it as an open sighted option when carrying a scoped handgun. it likes 28.5 grn h110 over a 300 grn xtp. I just loaded some 45 colts with 250 grn xtp and need to go to the range to test. this may be the perfect load for up close whitetails, hogs and general woods bumming.
