Ballistics Product

Hi everyone,

I am a student at LSU working on my senior capstone project within the department of Mechanical Engineering. My team and I are working towards optimizing a patented product, the Ultimate Ballistics Box. The Ultimate Ballistics Box is a torso simulator that perfectly simulates the torso of a white tail deer, elk, Cape Buffalo, and human test subject for ballistics testing.

I am very curious as to which part of the torso and at what angle of bullet strike on an elk does your UBB "perfectly simulate?"

LSUengineer, with all due respect, how does your UBB "perfectly simulate" the internal body fluids (75% + - ) of an animal?

Hi Gregg,

The UBB simulates any part of the torso that would require a bullet to travel through all four layers of anatomy: skin/hide, muscle, bone, and internal organs. For example, the rib bone. To make sure the shot ends up in a kill, the UBB's purpose is to make sure your specific firearm and ammo selection will travel through all four layers. We have not specified at what angle the bullet travels through the torso, however the UBB will replicate both straight-on and angled shots.

The UBB is designed to measure penetration depth of a bullet upon the torso, including the bone. One of the goals of the UBB is for the user to find out which of his/her bullets will or will not travel through the entire torso of given animal.

Hi Gregg,

The UBB aims at mimicking the specific weight and gravity of internal organs. We have researched, tested, and discovered that that water-filled bags accurately replicate internal organs.

I don't want to sound like a smart ass or know-it-all, but I've conducted these experiments on animals for the last 38 years- 2300+ deer, 75+ African and American game. Did autopsies of bullet tracks and damage. I have a pretty good idea what bullets do in game, what's good and what's bad. Be glad to share my info any time to the members.

Seems to me you'd be hard pressed to beat the effectiveness (cost, ballistic, or environmental) of water-filled milk jugs, bundles of wet newspaper, and a nice chunk of bovine bone from your butcher.

That being said, there's a ton of hunting gadgets sold every day that I'd never have a need for. Folks do seem to love em though!

Unfortunately paper is the worst as far as consistency is concerned. Anything that would simulate hide and bone is welcomed

I would be interested to see your results for deer size animals

It tends to be tougher than flesh. If your bullet does well in wetpack, it'll do well in flesh. It can be inconsistent day to day.

I'm sure the hitman has a ton of info and I hope he would share that with us, for example, mfg,bullet, bullet weight, recovered bullet weight and pro and cons of each bullet.

Yes, Doc has a wealth of all that info plus much more for many calibers in past issues of the Sixgunner, way too much info to even begin to list here.

Thanks, Greg. I have reams of notes, hundreds of bullets I've recovered from game. I'd be glad to share the info, but you gotta be specific. 38 years of writing is a little much for a post. Besides, I'm hunting about every day, getting ready to semi retire, so I can hunt more than every day!!
One thing I've surmised from the past is that if I can recover a bullet from a whitetail, then it's probably not very good for elk and larger. Results are surprising.

And FWIW, the latest SIXGUNNER has an article by Doc Rogers titled "The HIT MAN Part XXXV B: Deer. Now I am not very good at Roman Numerals but I believe that is #35?
