Rechambered TC barrels

Rechambered TC barrels - 03/19/2017 3:21 AM

Thought it might be interesting to see what everyone has had rechambered in the Contender and Encore platforms.

What was the original caliber and what was your choice for the new chambering?

Did you start with a factory barrel or custom?

Barrel length? How about resulting accuracy?

My Contender began life as a factory 35 Remington ?TC Super 14? with their ported brake ~1995. Not long after working with this setup, I sent the barrel to SSK and had it rechambered to the 358 JDJ with no other changes. I have had no issues in terms of accuracy; it will print 1 inch groups if I do my part. I have taken several deer with it over the years.

I had a .30-30 Contender barrel rechambered to .309 JDJ by SSK years ago. I shot deer and groundhogs out to 350 with it regularly.
It burned up in my house fire. Bought an original SSK .309 JDJ. Shoots the same. Never had problems with either barrel.

Ive never had a rechambered barrel......other than modifying a factory 35rem to accept a rimmed case. Of course the just adds a rim counter bore around the chamber mouth.
OTT did do some throat modifications on a 300 win mag encore barrel for me yrs ago...... Trying to get it to shoot acceptable with 180gr bullets. That, along with different powder selection did the job.

Well, it wasn't me that rechambered it, but I recently came into possession of a 12" 28gauge rifled pistol barrel that I was told came from a former muzzle loading barrel. It's ported and makes a ~16"pattern at 10 yards. At 20 yards there are game sized holes in the pattern. It's got a solid rib with a 2 bead sight. I think the sight is probably the only real advantage over the 45/410 barrel. Recoil is mild with little flip. Should make a nice trail walking/biking grouse barrel.

I had Mike Bellm rechamber a 357 Magnum to 357 Maximum. I also rechambered a 7-30 Waters to 7mm GNR which is basically a 7-30 Waters Ackley Improved. Both barrels will shoot lights out.

I've had several done. .22Hornet to K-Hornet, several 30-30 to 30-30Ack (13,16.25,&21".223 to.223Ack then to .22-250Ack( then cut to 15")357Herret to 356Win & a 45ACP to 45Colt. The gnsmth "tweaked" the spring ,which allows shooting 45ACP,45WinMag&45Colt. All great shooters & IMO worthwhile. Still pondering something like 35Krag,35-303 or 358JDJ from a 35Rem. Have [2] 357RMaxs,35Bullberry&35Rem also. ( Like I need another .35 !!)

I sent a carbine 30/30 barrel to SSK a couple weeks ago to have it rechambered to Ackley, so should have it back anytime. This is for a G2 my niece regularly deer hunts with. I intend to do the same with a 14" barrel when I come across one.

I rechambered a 45-70 to 45-90 Winchester. I used a Bergara encore rifle barrel as the base and a PTG reamer. Turned out great, accuracy is great and it's neat to use the same cartridge my great grandfather used.

I didn't need a rechambered barrel until I read this post. But still I don't know what I need to change from and to: 223 Rem, 7-08 (which shoots lights out) or .460 S&W Mag? Maybe I need a new barrel just so I can rechamber it.

As long as bore and twist match the desired caliber it's no biggie. My buddy Mike Bellm cuts the cleanest most precise chamber in the business bar none. I spent some time with him trying to learn his method but it would take more time than I had. Right now I've just re chambered a 15" 45-70 Encore barrel to 458 Lott which will also allow the use of 458 Win Mag ammo. Because the 45-70 twist is designed for lighter bullets I usually run 350gr Hornady RNSP bullets but accuracy with 500gr solids was acceptable. I have a 24" 45-70 barrel on the way that I am going to cut back and chamber in 450 Nitro Express and for it I am loading 450gr Swift A-Frames. The other project going at the moment is an experiment. Since TC doesn't make a factory .511 barrel I have a 15" 500S&W barrel with the muzzle tamer coming and I am going to chamber it in a modified 500 Nitro Express. My initial loads will be with .500, 500gr Hornady XTP's but I am already working on a proprietary hard cast design through Mountain Molds in the 550gr to 600gr range. The largest I've done in the past were the Lott's. That is the only time a handgun has set me back enough to have to take a step backwards so the Nitros should be interesting although they are lower pressure loads.

I have an old, very early 30-30 Contender rifle barrel, tapered that was rechambered by SSK into a 309JDJ and cut to 15". No break. It has been the most accurate Contender barrel I have.
I shoot 150grn Ballistic Tips and have taken whitetail out to 350 from a shooting blind and rest. I have a TC 2.5x7x28 scope and it has served me through several hundred rounds.
I have other SSK barrels but this is the only rechamber.

I received my 30-30 barrel back this week that I sent to SSK for rechambering to Ackley Improved and hopefully I can get in some range time this weekend for fireforming brass. I'm starting out with factory loaded Federal ammo for this task.
