284 in a T/C... or not?

Been itching to get a long range pistol set up to go along with my 7mm Rem Mag rifle I'm about to acquire. Thought I was going to go with the XP100, but I got to thinking about my old 460 S&W due to another thread on here. That 460 was built on a T/C Pro Hunter frame with an MGM barrel. One of the most accurate handguns I've ever owned.

If I build that T/C set up with a 284 barrel, will it do it justice, or do I need to get the XP100 in order to get the most out of the 284? I plan on shooting some long distance with it, so want to get set up accordingly. By "long distance", I mean 1000 yards or less. I'm not planning on being a member of the 10 mile club any time soon, like Ernie!!

I have a 16.5 in Encore barrel in .280 Remington. Pretty much the same thing. Advantage of going with the .284 Win is a hair longer barrel than the .280 Remington. Just because of cartridge length.

Personally, if you?re going with an Encore, why not chamber it for the 7 Mag like the rifle you are doing?

The bolt action XP will likely be more accurate over distance to 1,000 yards than a break action Encore. Consider all the inherent accuracy benefits to a bolt action rifle and they relate to the XP as well.

Good points Zee. Thanks. Some more to think about for sure. I can't imagine being more accurate than I was with my T/C 460. But that was only out to 300 yards on steel.

By the way, what I said above does not mean you can?t do it with an Encore in .284 Win.

Just that it?s not the most accurate of platforms for distances out to 1,000 yards.

With a bolt action pistol, you have the advantage of a free floated barrel and a receiver that does not need to be moved to reload.

Consistency breeds accuracy. A gun that stays in place shot after shot will be more consistent, or at least easier to be so, as one that must be removed and replaced after each shot.

When I am shooting groups with my bolt action rifles, I never move my body or remove my face from the stock between shots. I stay mounted the same way on the rifle for each shot. The only thing moving is my right hand to reload. That way, I am more consistent and as a result, more accurate and precise.

WOW, I WAS GOING TO DO A TOPIC ABOUT THE 284 IN AN ENCORE. SEEING JAY HUNT'S XP IN 284 GOT ME EXCITED. I HAVE A RATHER RARE TC CUSTOM SHOP (NEW HAMPSHIRE) 15 INCH ENCORE BARREL IN 7mm TCU. BOUGHT IT OUT OF NOSTALGIA RE MY IHMSA DAYS BUT HAVE NOT USED IT. WOULD THIS BE A GOOD CANDIDATE TO RECHAMBER TO 284? OR SHOULD I JUST MOVE THE BARREL? IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN IT, SEND ME A PM, I AM SURE WE COULD MAKE A DEAL.

It all depends on what you want to get out of it, and your budget.
It is just easier to do it with a XP versus a break-open.

I would just move that special barrel, and then have MGM or someone like them turn you out a 284 with the contour, twist rate, and scope base you desire. My 2 cents...

What is the twist rate of that barrel?

But it could be a 1-10.
If, it was designed for the sillywet game I would think a faster twist (like listed above), which would mean, it will easily stabilize and bullet weight you would want to use for hunting.

I would not recommend a rebated case in an Encore. If you go XP I think 284 will be fine..

For the encore I would look closer at something like a 7-08 or even taking rimmed Winchester 308 size brass to a 7mm

I have a 284win on a MGM Bull Barrel, super accurate.

If ya don't mind me asking, how far are you shooting? What load info?

ANY EXTRACTION PROBLEMS WITH THE REBATED RIM?

It was accurate with sub-MOA accuracy at 100 yards.

I never had an issue with extraction, which kinda surprised me with that rebated rim case. However, I never had an issue.

Performance wise, I had a 280 AI barrel (actually two) in the Encore platform that outperformed the 284Win barrel by a decent amount. I would still prefer the 280AI over the 284Win in the Encore.

As mentioned, the XP-100 is easier to shoot accurately than the Encore, and is my preferred platform for specialty pistols over the Encore. Trigger is better too, on the XP-100.

However, in the XP-100, I much prefer the 7mm RSAUM over the 284 Win.
