Hornady .38cal 180gr XTP cannelure ring - 04/12/2018 12:57 AM

I have been loading some .357 magnum Hornady 180gr XTP and seating bullet to the lower canalure. I just picked up another box at Midway and it only has one cannelure on top of bullet. I e-mailed Hornady & here is there response; On this bullet the lower or bottom crimp ring is actually a function of what press the bullets are made on some presses will need the lower crimp (knurled ring) to hold but bullet as the forward ring, or actual cannelure in rolled onto the bullet. With our increased production we now have machines that do not require a double ring and it is essentially a manufacturing item. Going forward you may or may not see the double cannelure depending on what machine the bullets are assigned to be produced on.

You will have to write down the lot number off of the first box and try to find more boxes of that lot number. That is if you like using the lower crimp ring.

I seat the 38cal 180gr XTP to lower cannelure to get a max amount of H-110 in my Blackhawk & contender pistols. I am going to seat to my normal COL without using cannelure and see if I get bullet movement in my Blackhawk. So bottom line is every time you order this bullet it will have one or two crimp rings depending on what machine Hornady uses.

HENDOG: 1 OR 2 CANNELURES ON THE BULLET CAN ALSO AFFECT PRESSURE AND VELOCITY, AS WILL THE CRIMP YOU USE. HORNADY JUST ADDED A LOT OF VARIABLES. IT IS LIKE GOING TO SAM's OR ACADEMY, NO GUARANTEE YOU WILL FIND WHAT YOU FOUND THERE LAST TIME.

Yep. Hornady?s lack of consistency is and has been a problem.

When I loaded for my FA`s 357 I always used the bottom groove to fill the case for those 1700fps loads...Glad I picked up the new cannelure tool....
