S&W M657-5 Classic Hunters - 08/18/2018 6:19 PM

I was checking one of my local gun shops websites and they had just freshly listed two S&W 657-5 revolvers. Both guns were listed has having the original boxes/cases, and from the pictures looked like they were in excellent shape. These are the 7 1/2 inch barrel models with full barrel underlug and Hogue rubber grips, and unfluted cylinders. I had owned one way back when, but traded it on some other toy of the month, later regretting that decision. I hadn't seen any in quite awhile so I was very surprised that they had two come in at the same time. I figured they wouldn't last long so I headed over there right after work. Both guns appear to be in excellent shape, and fired very little. The prices were a little higher than I would have normally wanted to pay, but based on their somewhat rarity and a little haggling, I put both of them in layaway. The only thing that struck me as odd was that while both were stamped 657-5 in the frame cut out, only one has the internal lock. Anyone who has info or comments on these guns is encouraged to post it here, as I would welcome it greatly. I intend to set up one of them with a Weigand scope base and a 2-6X Bushnell scope, or an Ultradot, and use it for hunting.

hey mech... I have the same handgun with the 657-5 stamp along with the lock....This has been accurate from the start.... Had it scoped early on and then installed a Bowen rough Country rear... Its taken a fair share of game.....

Look like Herrett's to me too. That gun looks like it's all business.

Nice looking handgun. So far I have never owned a 41 Magnum Smith & Wesson. I have owned several 357's and 44 Magnums, but the 57's and 657's have never managed to follow me home so far.

That`s them.....You send them a outline of your shooting hand which they keep, and choose the stock you want...These grips go a long way in keeping the straight back recoil, of DA revolvers, from hurting your hand....

According to the book, the key lock was the defining difference between the dash 4 and the dash 5. If you have one that is marked dash 5 and was not made for a lock, you may have a rare revolver. Could it have an after market plug?
