Primers for 454 Casull loads - 12/27/2018 10:16 PM

I see some of you do not use mag primers when loading 296 and H 110. for 454 Casull loads. Is this because it is a rifle primer?I know with pistol primers I always use a mag primer with 296/110.Just dont wont any squibs.

I've had good results with Remington 7 1/2, CCI 400 and Federal 200 primers in .454 Casull. All give great accuracy, low extreme spreads and good velocity. My favorite is Rem 7 1/2. CCI 450 magnum small rifle primers have not improved any aspect of my .454 loads.

When I had a 454, I used 30+ grains of 296 and a cci small rifle primer. I never had any issues of squib loads. I'll admit, I didn't really do any cold weather hunting; coldest temperatures I had it out in and shot was 15-20 degrees F.

I've used both standard and magnum primers in the Casull, with consistent results and very little difference in velocity. Accuracy does not appear to change between brands or types of primers.

Rem.7 1/2 with h-110 and 296. Use cci 400 for 2400.

F205's mostly since they always go bang in my 454 Redhawk shooting DA. Rem 7.5's or F205's in FA loads. Hornady load data uses F205's, FA data Rem 7.5's. I've also got some loads for my 454 levergun with CCI450's. Come to think of it. I use CCI 400's for Unique plinker loads.

Great thread and very relevant for me right now. Thanks! I would add that Barnes uses Federal 205 in their published loads and list h110 as the most accurate. I did find that magnum primers worked better in my 45-70 loads with RL7.

I use the CCI 450's in all of my Casull loads. Had issues with ignition and squibs with the regular small rifle primers. Have never had any issues since I switched to the CCI 450's.
