S&W 10in PC 460 Initial impression/ scope question - 01/08/2019 2:41 PM

WOW....

That is my initial impression, what fun. This is relative to the previous post on a friends 460. We finally got to test fire it. We used 45 colt to get the scope on paper, then moved up to 454 then to 460. The heft of the gun and the compensator made it very tame. I will say the 460 load threw alot of stuff into our face everytime so eye protection required. I fired an early X-frame without compensator and I think a 6 inch barrel and it was brutal but this PC compensated version was very nice. Groups with the HSM Bear load (Lead WFN) was excellent. We moved to the 460 loads and got very good groups but the Nikon scope ran out of adjustment. This had the BDC dots so using those we got in the bullseye. What can be done to recify this issue? To summarize the 460 loads shoot low and the scope is maxed out.

That?s odd. I never had that kind issue with either of my 460s. Do you have another scope you could try on yours? Maybe put the Nikon on another gun as well just to cover your bases.

Yes, I have a Simmons I just replaced with a Leupold so I will suggest he try that. He is wanting to hunt with it this year so I think he plans to live with the 454's then after the season we can start experimenting. I only see shimmed one piece base as an option since the rail is part of the pistol. That looks like it would raise the scope higher which is bad. He has a workable solution to get him thru early Feb when Ala season closes then we can start experimenting.

Try higher rings

I had that happen with my 460 xvr revolver and higher ringers helped. Sometimes the problem is opposite and u may go with lower rings. Depends on the cause. What 460 loads were you using again?

Quick fix, shim the bottom of the rear ring to raise POI. Better fix, Burris Signature rings with adjustable shims inside the rings.

All loads were factory,454 was the HSM Bear load with WFN lead, i will get specifics of all. Will look into burris, i would be concerned with shims since i think one shim would create a misalignment and proper torque could damage scope tube. I would think lower rings could help and we will try both

Before l took the scope of my 460PC l had a Leupold 4 EER on it.

Never any problem with running out adjustment.. 0pen sights are

another story... My gun shoots high with 240-260gr loads. l need

a taller front sight to bring my loads impact DOWN.

It seems counter to my logic but the S&W PC guy said to try higher mount for scope.

Would the Burris Signature rings with the inserts handle a shim under one mount and still hold the scope securely under 460 recoil?

Burris offers Pos-Align offset inserts for their Signature rings that allow a gun to be sighted in when the scope runs out of windage or elevation adjustment. The offset insert kit comes with 3 different size inserts and clear directions on how to move POI using the inserts. They are designed to change POI and securely hold a scope. I think they will work well on your 460, but I've only used them with 44 mag and 7-08 handguns.

Also, if you raise the reticle with a higher mount, POI will go lower.

Thanks, that may be the only option. I agree higher mount would make the problem worse.

Re: S&W 10in PC 460 Initial impression/ scope question - 01/17/2019 4:52 PM

Maybe not relevant anymore but the loads were:
HSM Bear Load 454 Casull 325 Wide Flat Nose Gas Check 1330 fps
Federal Fusion:460 S&W 260 gr soft point 1600 fps
Velocity data is from manufacturer's web sites.

Gonna push him to Burris Pos-Align offset inserts for their Signature rings
Thanks all again.

Good luck to you and your friend in the Alabama deer woods. Hope you let us know how it turns out.

Finally got the Signature rings installed with the offset inserts. Shooting session soon but I found it strange the rings had a recoil lug along the bottom that was wider than the groove in the S&W XVR rail. We simply filed the Aluminum until is fit and pushed them forward in the groove before tightening. I think things will be just fine but still found it strange. Owner had to go out of town today so he left it with me to do some initial shooting.
