A "keeper"

This early blued .44 Redhawk will always have a place in my collection. This handgun has it all.. Strength, accuracy, scope ready, decent trigger (after installing a new spring and trigger stop), changeable front sights. I had a problem sighting 300gr bullets using iron sights as there was not enough height with the front blade. Bought a extra high front sight from Bowen and that cured the problem. Remember shooting the old 240gr LSWC-GC ammo from Winchester and on top of decent 100yd groups using a scope, the mirror smooth bore showed little leading. Anyone else like their Redhawk???

I remember the first Redhawk I got to actually handle. It was in a gun shop in St. Joseph MO. I couldn't begin to afford it at the time (final year in college) but told the dealer I would someday own one.

Shortly after graduation with a decent job "someday" came. It was a 7 1/2" SS 44. Traded that one for the first 5 1/2" I saw and took my first handgun deer with that one in 1984. I still have that 5 1/2" as well as two more in 45 Colt. I have had a few other 44's pass through my hands. Had one with cut outs for a scope but just never warmed up to the optic on them.

So to answer your question, YES I like my Redhawks. Anytime I shot a 44 Mag it always had to stack up to the Big Red. Some have come pretty close, but none have surpassed them in my opinion for all of the reasons you mentioned. They are bull strong and can handle just about any load you can assemble. The replaceable front sight is one of its greatest features and like you I have the Bowen taller sight for the heavyweights.

If anything has been a challenge with the Redhawk it is grip selection. The factory grip feels fine until I shoot them.

My first big bore was a Redhawk in 44 mag. Shot a whitetail doe with it.

Dan, You describe the Redhawk much better then I and your words are "on the money"..... However, for me, the factory grips are almost a perfect fit for my hand even with the heaviest handloads

The Redhawk was the first hunting handgun I ever wanted when I was a kid. I saved and saved but never could afford one in the 80s. Settled for a Super Blackhawk.

When I finally acquired my first Redhawk, it was a dream come true. I now have 3 of them.

Nice Redhawk James. I like my 45 Redhawk, but I can't find any grips that compare to my Super Redhawk with the Hogue Tamer grips. I wish I could find an older set of Uncle Mikes to try out.

Mine is a ?keeper? also! Awesome gun. Used pachmayr grippers for yrs but thought they were too thin. I like these uncle mikes a lot. Factory grips are too small for me.
