Scope mounting question

When mounting a scope on a heavy recoil revolver, is it better to have the rings as close to the turret as possible?

This is my first time installing a scope on a revolver. Watched Max?s video on shooting BFR 500 JRH and it appears his rings are very close to the turret.

I suggest spreading the rings out as much as you can to support the scope and for heavy recoil guns use 3 rings or 4 if you have room. I like 2 in front with the scope turret seating against the 2nd ring preventing the scope from drifting forward as the gun recoils. Clean all mating surfaces of scope and inner rings with alcohol to remove any oil trace.

With a heavy kicker, you'll want steel rings, not aluminum. My preference is the Warne Maxima vertical split rings. Buy two pairs and try to fit all four of them on the scope if possible. If not, use three.

As far as placement, I've always tried to spread them out as much as possible, with the rear ring up against the adjustment knob bell of my scope. That said, Max knows a whole lot more about big bore revolvers than I do.

Heavy kickers and scopes = 3 rings minimum.
2 in front, 1 in the rear

If you are using a red dot like an Ultradot then you can probably get away with 2.

I run 3-4 rings typically if I have room.

UltraDots have held up with 2 rings on my .500 S&W and .475 L. Everything else has 2 in front, 1 in back.

Like the "Hitman" said , two in front and one in back. I have had excellent results with Leupold Rifleman Vertical split rings on my Freedom Arms .475 Linebaugh shooting heavy loads and also on an SSK .376 Steyr Encore that RIPS Butler Creek Lens covers in half every 5 - 10 shots. It really matters how heavy of an optic you are putting on your gun. The heavier the optic the more stress on your mounting system.

I'd also recommend Warne Maxima ... nice quality and they hold.
