445 Super Mag Question

445 Super Mag Question - 09/14/2019 10:51 PM

Was looking at this caliber, why I don't know. Did buy a set of Redding 445 Dies last night.
Not a big fan of the heavy hitters anymore, but nevertheless I noticed something I found interesting. Thinking about a 15 inch Contender barrel with brake. Not sure what bullet weight I will use. MGM list the only twist available as 1/20 and Bullberry list 1/14 or 1/16. I understand the heavier bullets need faster twist but I found this odd. Opinions or experience with either would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance
Doug

Recoil from the 445 out of my 12" plus brake Encore Bullberry Bull Barrel is very mild, even with 31.5 gr of H110 and a 300 gr bullet

I run 240gn XTP and 325gn WFN-GC out of my 10in Contender. Without a brake, it is devastating on both ends.

My .445 SM is a Dan Wesson with an 8? barrel. I?ve run the 240 XTPs wide open, my handgun silhouette load was the Sierra 250 grain silhouette ahead of 34.0 of AA1680 . Made cases from .303 British, and still load them. Recoil is nothing to write home about, even on an 80 round relay.

I?m getting 1,980 fps with the 240gn XTP and 32.5gn H110 as well as 1,700 fps with the 325gn WFN-GC and 29.3gn H110.

Most pleased with how she shoots.

I would only opt for a twist faster than 1-20" if I was going to shoot 400gr bullets. Which is to say never, because for whatever one might think 400gr bullets are good for, 300gr monolithics are better.
