45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS

45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/21/2019 12:27 PM

PICKED UP A NEW RUGER SS 45 COLT BISLEY HUNTER (7 1/2 INCH BARREL) FROM MY DEALER YESTERDAY. WILL CHRONICLE MY "JOURNEY" WITH IT AS I GET IT SHOOTING "RIGHT".

HAVE A BELT MOUNTAIN No. 5 STYLE BASE PIN FOR IT, A ROUTINE ADD ON BY ME ON RUGER REVOLVERS. HAVE SOME WARNE RINGS ON THE WAY FOR IT AS MY FIRST (AND ONLY) EXPERIENCE WITH RUGER REVOLVER RINGS 30 YEARS AGO WAS NOT A GOOD ONE. GUN HAS AN OK TRIGGER BUT WILL PROBABLY TWEAK SOME WITH SOME NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS WORK ON THE TRIGGER SPRING. PULLED THE CYLINDER OUT TO CHECK THE THROATS, WHICH ON RUGER 45 COLT REVOLVERS ARE NOTORIOUSLY TIGHT. THE THROATS WERE TIGHT, VERY TIGHT, AND COULD NOT GET CAST NOR JACKETED .452 BULLETS TO EVEN GET CLOSE TO PASSING THRU, SO TODAY THE CYLINDER GOES OFF TO FERMIN "2 DOGS" GARZA FOR THROAT THERAPY.

SHOULD HAVE THE CYLINDER BACK SOON BUT I WILL BE UP AT MY RANCH MOST OF NEXT WEEK SO I AM THINKING IT WILL BE THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 2, 2019, WHEN I CAN PUT IT ALL TOGETHER AND START SHOOTING. I BOUGHT SOME SPEER 250gr DEEP CURL HP BULLETS WHICH I AM GOING TO LOAD OVER 26+ grs OF 296 (LOAD DATA OUT OF LOADDATA.COM). WOW, THE HP ON THAT SPEER BULLET IS BIG, REALLY IMPRESSIVE. I WANT TO USE THIS REVOLVER FOR DEER, HOGS AND AOUDAD EWES. WILL SCOPE IT AND PROBABLY SIGHT IT IN @ 75 YARDS, MAYBE 100 YARDS IF IT IS ACCURATE ENUFF.

I AM EXCITED ABOUT THIS JOURNEY AS I AM SORT OF GOING BACK TO MY ROOTS WHEN IN 1972 I SHOT MY FIRST WHITETAIL BUCK WITH A REVOLVER USING A OM 7 1/2 INCH RUGER 45 COLT (OPEN SIGHTS) AND A HORNADY 250 HP OVER 13grs OF UNIQUE.

Sounds like a plan! I really like the Gold Dot/Deep Curl bonded design over cup & core bullets. You ought to let Jack tune and stock it.

Rey, after seeing the 265AF I?m considering just using that weight for all my 45 colt needs and simply change bullet styles to suit game. Speer 260JHP, and Swift 265AF IMO, should make a good all around combo.

Good to meet you..............

Spend the $15 and buy some good Wolfe Springs.

If you plan on shooting big heavy bullets a Ken power pawl may be in order.

You are spot on with the throat work. I have a buddy in NC that has a jig grinder. He does mine they come back closer than I can measure with a bore mic. He says they are within .0002"

Try a 250 XTP with 20.5 of 2400 and a CCI 350. You will not be disappointed.

I have mine as well so following closely. What throat size is recommended? I also plan a free spin Pawl, wolfe Spring set and now possibly a base pin. How does the #5 Allen screw enhance the better pin fit?

Nice revolver! I had the 44 bisley hunter and they are a sweet gun. I just recently traded it off for an xp. As nice as it was, didnt need it as I rarely hunt with a revolver(if i even hunt) and i have my wonderful Redhawk that ive had since the 80s.
Look forward to your shooting and hunts.

TRAPR: I LOOKED FOR THE SPEER 260gr 45 BULLET, BUT I AM NOT SURE IT IS MADE ANYMORE OR IS NOT READILY AVAILABLE, SO I WENT WITH THE GOLD DOT 250.

SHORT 30: THE BELT MOUNTAIN BASE PINS ARE SLIGHTLY LARGER IN DIAMETER SO THEY TAKE SOME PLAY OUT OF THE CYLINDER. THE LOCKING SCREW HELPS KEEP THE BASE PIN IN AND NOT JUMPING FORWARD.

H2OBUG: I WANT TO SEE HOW GOOD THE GUN WILL SHOOT WITH AS LITTLE EXPENSE AS POSSIBLE. AFTER THIS DEER SEASON I MAY SEND IT OFF FOR AN ACTION/ACCURACY JOB.

WHAT IS THE MV OF THAT LOAD? DO YOU GET ANY UNBURNED POWDER?

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/22/2019 3:56 AM

I wish Speer made a 260 Deep Curl soft point.

Rey, I'll be anxious to hear how that bullet holds up at the velocity you'll be getting. I just purchased some of the same bullets and yes the HP cavity is huge. The reviews I read say it expands at standard 45 Colt velocities. I have worked up a load at 950 fps. Quite accurate but have not used them on a deer yet.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/22/2019 11:56 AM

DAN: I WAS THINKING HIGHER VELOCITY FOR LONGER RANGE (UP TO 100 YARDS) WITHOUT A RAINBOW TRAJECTORY. AT THE SOUTH TEXAS DEER LEASE I HAVE ACCESS TO, MOST BLIND/FEEDER SET UPS ARE AT LEAST 100 YARDS (RIFLE HUNTER DOMINATED). AT MY RANCH MOST ARE 75 YARDS OR LESS (HANDGUN HUNTER OWNER). THINKING I WILL START WITH HIGHER VELOCITY AND SEE HOW IT WORKS ON ANIMALS. THE BULLETS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE BONDED SO THEY SHUD HOLD UP BETTER.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/23/2019 8:08 PM

MAILED THE CYLINDER, PRIORITY MAIL, TO 2 DOGS ON THURSDAY 11/21/19, HE GOT IT YESTERDAY 11/22/19, DID THE THROAT THERAPY AND MAILED IT BACK, ALL IN THE DAME DAY. SPOKE WITH 2 DOGS, SAYS THROATS WERE .450 AND VERY ROUGH, THE SS CYLINDER WAS HARD AS HELL, AND HE REAMED THEM TO .453 AND LAPPED THEM TO SMOOTH THEM OUT. A WHILE BACK HE REAMED SOME S&W CYLINDERS TO .453 FOR ME AND IT HAS WORKED VERY WELL. IF I GET THE CYLINDER MONDAY I WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE THE REVOLVER WITH ME TO THE HIGHPOINT ON TUESDAY AND MAYBE GET IT SIGHTED IN AND BLOODIED.

JUST LOADED 40 ROUNDS, FED 155M PRIMERS, STARLINE CASES, 27grs 296, AND THE 250gr SPEER GDHP. WILL MOUNT A SCOPE TOMORROW, AND, IF THE CYLINDER GETS HERE MONDAY, I CAN WORK WITH MY "HUNTER" UP AT THE RANCH.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/26/2019 1:34 AM

GOT THE CYLINDER BACK IN THE MAIL TODAY; MOUNTED A 2.5x7 SIMMONS SCOPE SUNDAY, USING WARNE RINGS; THE BELT MOUNTAIN No. 5 STYLE BASE PIN FITS GOOD; THE FACTORY GRIPS HAVE A HUGE GAP AT THE TOP (I CAN SEE THE SAME GAP ON THE PHOTO OF SHORT30's BISLEY HUNTER THAT HE HAS POSTED), SO I PUT SOME NICE "IVORY" LOOKING GRIPS ON IT AND HAVE SOME ELK STAG GRIPS THAT NEED A LITTLE FITTING. GUN IS ALL PUT TOGETHER, TAKING IT WITH ME UP TO THE RANCH.

Good luck. Speer specifically warns shooters NOT to use the 250 DCHP on game at muzzle velocities above 1000 fps. Expansion will be violent and the bullet is suitable ONLY for varmints. There are much more appropriate bullets available, why risk a wounded deer by using the wrong bullet?

I tried some of these Gold Dots a couple of years back, not on game but into my standard test medium of 3 one gallon jugs filled with water at 50 yards. Muzzle velocity according to my records was 1084 fps for a five shot average. Accuracy was good but I felt the bullet over expanded for hunting use, especially for pigs. Retained weight was 248 grains, and expanded diameter was .937 at it's largest measurement.

Not certain how well the pictures came out, but it looks like a little spider. I think these would be an excellent defense bullet for people carrying a 45 Colt. I've been sticking to Sierra 240gr JHC's for my standard S&W 625 load of 13.0 grains HS-6 with a Fed 155 primer, and using Hornady 250gr XTP's in my hotter loads for my T/C's and FA's.

Retained weight was basically 100%. Sounds like a good hunting bullet to me!

WAS VERY SLOW AT THE RANCH OVER THANKSGIVING AND I DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO SHOOT AT ANYTHING WITH THE HUNTER, AND BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON I STARTED GUIDING A FRIEND FROM ALASKA AND QUIT HUNTING. HOPE TO GET TO THE RANGE THIS WEEK TO CHECK IT OUT AT 105 YARDS, AS I WANT TO TAKE IT UP TO MY SOUTH TEXAS "SUB-LEASE" WHERE I HAVE A TROPHY BUCK TAG.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 12/02/2019 3:45 PM

Did you get any specifics on the throating operation? Were they different/varied or just undersized? Mine shot the HSM Bear Loads extremely well so I considered not doing it but all the internet wise guys said it never hurts, only improves the results if the throats are consistent. All were undersized with 5 being very consistent with the 6th being more undersized in comparison. I used the 4DReamer kit and made them all .452. I have not shot it yet so anxious to see impacts.

SHORT30: 2 DOGS ADVISED THAT THE THROATS WERE .450 AND VERY ROUGH, HE OPENED THEM UP TO .453 AND LAPPED THEM TO SMOOTH THEM OUT. HAVE SHOT 4 ROUNDS ONLY TO SIGHT IN AT 50 YARDS. THE LAST 3 SHOTS ALL TRACKED EXTREMELY WELL WITH THE SCOPE ADJUSTMENTS, WHICH MAKES ME THINK IT IS ACCURATE. NEED TO GET OUT TO MY RANGE THIS WEEK AND SHOOT IT AT 105 YARDS AND SEE WHAT I GOT.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 12/03/2019 4:11 PM

Interested in seeing the results, I have quite a few of the 250gr Gold Dots and I know years back I fired one into some water using H110 and it blew to tiny bits, I've since been under the impression that it doesn't do too well at high speed since it will hold up (barely) if kept under 1100 fps. The 250 XTP is stronger for sure.

Sorry for the late reply, been out hunting. Check the Speer Number 15 Manual, top of page 873: Ballistic Notes. Not everything of importance can be found on the Internet. Books.

I?ve used the Hornady 250 XTP on several deer at around 1250 fps, it holds together and penetrates.

Hodgdon lists a maximum charge of 24.0 grains of H110, your load is 3 grains above that pressure-tested data. Speer?s maximum for that powder and exact bullet is 21.0 grains. Like I said before, good luck.

WENT TO THE RANGE THIS MORNING FOR A QUICKIE SESSION USING MY LOAD WITHG THE 250gr BULLETS, DEADLY ON A 6 1/2 INCH SWINGER @ 100 YARDS, SHOWED PROMISE ON PAPER @ 105 YARDS. WILL TAKE IT UP TO THE DEER LEASE AND PLAN TO GET IN A BLIND THIS AFTERNOON AND TOMORROW MORNING, WILL HAVE THE HUNTER AND A 10 INCH FA 454 WITH ME, WHICH I REVOLVER I USE, IF MR. BIG SHOWS UP, "DEPENDS".

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 12/08/2019 5:49 PM

NICE JAVILNA BOAR I SHOT WITH THE PICTURED RUGER 45 COLT BISLEY HUNTER, USING WARNE RINGS, A 2.5-7x28 SIMMONS SCOPE (SET AT 5x) AND THE SPEER GOLD DOT/DEEP CURL 250gr HP's OVER 27grs OF 296. SHOT WAS AT 95 YARDS AND THE BOAR FELL RIGHT THERE, SHOULDER SHOT AND COMPLETE PENETRATION.

ENTRY HOLE IS ON THE LEFT, EXIT ON THE RIGHT. THIS WAS ONLY A 50lb ANIMAL SO IT IS NOT A DEFINITIVE SIGN OF ANYTHING, BUT THE PERFORMANCE WAS GOOD ENUFF TO WARRANT FURTHER USE AND TESTING.

FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON's HUNT I OPTED FOR MY 10 INCH FA 454. IN SOUTH TEXAS YOU DO NOT RECOVER DEER THE NEXT MORNING, YOU ONLY FIND WHAT THE COYOTES LEAVE YOU, SO FOR AFTERNOON DEER HUNTS I PREFER BIGGER, BETTER, PROVEN, etc. BTW, FRIDAY AFTERNOON I PASSED ON A WIDE, SYMETRICAL, MATURE, SHOOTER, 10 POINTER, BECAUSE I KNOW THERE ARE 2 LIFETIME APEX BUCKS OUT THERE ON THE "HIT LIST". FOR MORNING HUNTS I WILL USE THE BISLEY HUNTER.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 12/22/2019 12:17 AM

I WAS TRYING TO ADD SOME PHOTOS OF A BUCK I SHOT THIS MORNING, THE PHOTOS ARE ON THE BRAGGING BOARD BUT IN DRAFTS I COULD NOT GET THEM TO APPEAR HERE IN THE TOPIC, I WUD JUST GET THE "PHOTOPOST" INFO. ANYWAY, ON A SOUTH TEXAS LEASE I GO TO A LOT AS A GUEST, THE LAST 2 YEARS I SAW A BEAUTIFUL BUCK WITH A LOT OF POINTS. I HAD PERMISSION TO SHOOT BUT I WAS NOT GOING TO SHOOT A BUCK LIKE THAT ON AN INVITE. THIS YEAR I HAD SKIN IN THE GAME AND HAD A BUCK TAG, AND I KNEW WHICH BUCK I WANTED! THIS BUCK ("MANY POINTS") AND A HUGE MAIN FRAME 10 WITH A KICKER WERE THE 2 APEX BUCKS ON THE RANCH AS PER THE CAMERA SURVEY. FOR EVENING HUNTS I WAS USING A 10 INCH FA 454, AND FOR MORNING HUNTS I WOULD SWITCH TO THE 45 COLT BISLEY HUNTER.

I SAT IN THE SAME BLIND, THE BLIND WHERE I HAD SEEN MANY POINTS IN YEARS PAST. HE WAS AN OCCASIONAL VISITOR TO THE FEEDER BUT NO WHERE NEAR A REGULAR. I SAT AT THIS BLIND 6 OR 7 TIMES THIS MONTH (DECEMBER 2019) AND WAS SEEING DOES, FAWNS, A YOUNG 8 AND A BIG 150 CLASS MAINFRAME WIDE 11, BUT NOT "MANY POINTS". I KEPT HOPING TO SEE HIM ON A MORNING HUNT SO I COULD USE THE HUNTER BUT WOULD NOT HAVE PASSED ON HIM IN THE AFTERNOON WITH THE 454. THIS WEEK THE QUAIL HUNTERS WERE AT THE LEASE, AND THEY CAN GET THE DEER TO MOVE AROUND, THEN THURSDAY THE DAUGHTER OF A LESSEE KILLED THE WIDE 11, SO I AM THINKING MAYBE "MANY POINTS" MAY MOVE IN AND SHOW UP. NO SHOW YESTERDAY AFTERNOON BUT EARLY THIS MORNING HE SHOWED UP. IT WAS LEGAL SHOOTING HOURS, BUT IT WAS DARKER THAN I PREFER PLUS WAS IT WAS OVERCAST AND MISTY. I THOUGHT IT WAS HIM BUT THE LIGHT WAS REAL BAD AND I WAS NOT SURE. HE WAS EATING SOME XTRA CORN I HAD PUT OUT AROUND THE FEEDER PEN. FINALLY HE TURNED AND I ID'ed HIM BY A DISTINCTIVE KICKER ON HIS LEFT SIDE. HE WAS FEEDING, BROADSIDE, AT 90-95 YARDS, SO WITH MY HUNTER, AND SCOPE SET AT 5x, I SHOT AT HIM. I THOUGHT I AIMED AT THE SHOULDER BUT IT WAS A DOUBLE LUNG SHOT WITH COMPLETE PENETRATION USING THE 250gr SPEER DCHP. HE RAN AT THE SHOT AND A VERY SHORT TIME LATER I SEE MOVEMENT DOWN THE SENDERO. I GLASS WITH MY BINO's AND IT LOOKS LIKE A DEAD DEER IN THE ROAD.

I WAS COOL AND CALM THRU THE SHOT BUT REALLY STARTED SHAKING AFTER THE SHOT. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND GOT DOWN TO CHECK. APPROX 60 YARDS FROM WHERE I HIT HIM THERE HE WAS DEAD. HE RAN AROUND 90 YARDS TO GET TO WHERE HE FELL. THIS BUCK HAD A LIVE WEIGHT OF 170lbs, GROSS SCORE OF 170.75, MAINFRAME 12 WITH 3 XTRA POINTS PER SIDE. EVEN IF I DEDUCT A PEEWEE "RING" POINT HE WAS STILL JUST OVER 170 GROSS AND A BONAFIDE 17 POINTER. A GREAT MORNING, AND WHAT A FIRST DEER KILL FOR THE HUNTER.

HERE ARE PICTURES FROM THE BRAGGING BOARD (I WAS LEAVING OUT A . WHICH WAS SCREWING ME UP).

LEST YOU THINK I AM FAST WITH THE "TAPE MEASURE", THE GAME MANAGEMENT PROGRAM ON THIS RANCH REQUIRES LIVE AND FIELD DRESSED WEIGHTS, B&C SCORES, PHOTOS AND AGING THE BUCK via THE LOWER JAW TEETH, BUT I DIDN'T NEED A TAPE MEASURE TO KNOW THIS BUCK WAS SPECIAL. INSIDE SPREAD WAS ONLY 14.5 INCHES BUT THE MASS WAS INCREDIBLE.

SO FAR 2 SHOTS ON GAME WITH THE BISLEY 45 COLT HUNTER AND 2 KILLS. WILL CHECK THE RIB CAGE ON THE BUCK TOMORROW WHEN HE IS SKINNED OUT TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY SIGN OF BULLET BLOW UP. THE VAQUERO (COWBOY) THAT GUTTED HIM FOR ME SAID HE FOUND NO BULLET FRAGMENTS IN THE INNARDS. LEST YOU THINK I CAN'T GUT MY OWN DEER, I HAVE GUTTED AND PROCESSED MANY DEER OVER THE YEARS, BUT NOW I DO NOT MIND TIPPING THE VAQUERO $20 OR SO TO DO IT, PLUS IT HELPS THEM OUT. I WISH I HAD NAILED THIS BUCK IN THE SHOULDER BUT I DOUBLE LUNGED HIM. SO FAR I AM LIKING THESE SPEER DCHP 250gr BULLETS. NEED TO CHRONO THE LOAD (27grs OF 296) BUT I AM GUESSING 1,300fps PLUS, MAYBE 1.400fps. ALSO, SO FAR I AM REALLY LIKING THIS RUGER BISLEY HUNTER.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 12/23/2019 11:54 PM

THE FIELD PICTURES OF THE BUCK DID NOT DO IT JUSTICE SO I TOOK ANOTHER PICTURE THIS MORNING AT THE TAXIDERMY SHOP.

EARLIER IN THIS TOPIC THERE WAS DISCUSSION ON WHETHER OR NOT THE SPEER 250gr .452 DEEP CURL/GOLD DOT HP BULLET (DC AND GD's ARE THE SAME BULLET) WAS TOO FRANGIBLE FOR "RUGER" VELOCITIES. I AM LOADING THEM OVER 27grs OF 296 AND THEY FEEL ZIPPY AND I AM GUESSING 1,300fps +, MAYBE EVEN 1,400fps. HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO CHRONO THEM YET. THAT LOAD WORKED GOOD ON A 50 OR SO POUND JAVELINA @ 90-95 YARDS (THRU THE SHOULDERS WITH NO SIGN OF FRAGMENTATION/BULLET BREAKUP). BELOW ARE PICTURES OF THE LUNGS, THE INSIDE ENTRY HOLE, THE INSIDE EXIT HOLE AND THE OUTSIDE EXIT HOLE. AGAIN, NO SIGN OF FRAGMENTATION OR BULLET BREAKUP, BUT NOTE THE HEMORRAGHING ON THE OUTSIDE EXIT. I DID NOT DO FROGS IN HIGH SCHOOL NOR COLLEGE AND AM NOT MUCH OF A NECROPSYist BUT ALL THIS LOOKS GOOD TO ME. HOPE TO DEAD CENTER A GOOD SIZE HOG IN THE SHOULDERS UP AT THE HIGHPOINT BEFORE YEAR'S END. I AM BETTING THAT THE BULLET WILL WORK THEN TOO, EVENTHOUGH THE IMPACT DISTANCE WOULD PROBABLY BE 25-35 YARDS LESS.

BTW, A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Fantastic deer Rey. I was one that was worried about driving this bullet too fast. I've been impressed so far with the accuracy but have not used them on game. Was anxiously waiting for your results. Actual "field" tests trumps speculation every time. Thanks for reporting the details on the bullet performance. All fears I had using the DCHP on deer have been alleviated.

Again great buck and congratulations on a fine hunt.

load of 260gr Speers for a SONG off GunBroken awhile back Never

loaded them in 45 Colt... l have shot bunches of them in BAM

BAM, my 460S&W.

Favourite load is a ''REDUCED'' one found in Speer. 30gr of 2400

gives me app 1600FPS.

The 260 Speers were pulled boolits too... Sorry for Speer to drop

its 260

That's one great deer and the Speer performed great. I killed a small buck (15yds) and a doe (35yds) last year using the 44Spl. 200 grain Gold Dot at approx. 850fsp. Bullet went thru both and I cut the skin and recovered both bullets. Good mushroom and great performance. Again that is one heavy antlered deer. Congrats!

I SHOT THIS NICE SIZED AOUDAD EWE, PROBABLY 100 - 125lbs LW, @ 66 YARDS ON SATURDAY 12/28/19. I WAS USING THE RUGER BISLEY HUNTER IN 45 COLT, SCOPE SET AT 5x, AND 27grs OF 296 UNDER THE SPEER DEEP CURL 250gr HP. THE SHOT IS SLIGHTLY DOWNHILL AND THE TERRAIN IS UNEVEN AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE A PERFECT BROADSIDE SHOT USUALLY IS DISTORTED BY THE ANIMALS FOOTING IN THE UNEVEN TERRAIN. ALSO, TENDENCY IS TO SHOOT HIGH AT THESE SHORTER DOWNHILL RANGES. BULLET HIT HER IN THE SPINE, BEHIND THE SHOULDER, SHE DROPPED IMMEDIATELY, CRAWLED 12 YARDS AND DIED FAST. BULLET WAS JUST UNDER THE SKIN IN THE OFFSIDE (THE POINT OF THE KNIFE BLADE IS POINTING TO WHERE THE SLUG IS). MOST OF THE BLOOD, AND THERE WAS A LOT OF IT, WAS FROM THE ENTRY HOLE, WITH A LITTLE FROM THE MOUTH AND/OR NOSTRILS.

THIS IS WHERE SHE FELL, AND ALL THIS BLOOD CAME OUT OF THE ENTRY HOLE. I AM "THINKING" THAT THE BULLET BLEW BONE SHRAPNEL DOWN INTO THE LUNGS CAUSING MASSIVE HEMMORAGHING.

PHOTOS OF THE RECOVERED BULLET, RECOVERED JUST UNDER THE SKIN, RETAINED WEIGHT 166grs. PRETTY GOOD TEST FOR THE BULLET, SHORTER RANGE (66 YARDS IN A STRAIGHT LINE, BUT MAYBE ONLY 60 YARDS OF GRAVITY) AND WENT THRU THE SPINE. WHEN I CUT THE BULLET OUT I FELT AROUND FOR SHRAPNEL AND ALL I DUG OUT WERE PIECES OF BONE. NOTHING HERE THAT WILL KEEP ME FROM USING THESE BULLETS IN THE HUNTER FOR DEER, AOUDAD EWES, JAVELINA AND HOGS.

Bisley Hunter appears to be working out nicely. Let us know how the 300 grainers work out in testing.

Rey, you just cost me some money. My local gun shop got one of those Hunter's in, and I just couldn't resist. Trigger is not bad for out of the box, but I'll probably put in a spring kit later. As far as projects go, do we ever catch up? Congrats on some very fine animals and some excellent shooting. I'm glad the Gold Dot is working out for you, and I look forward to more reports soon!

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 03/29/2020 7:58 PM

TODAY (3/29/30) I GOT TO CHRONY THE 250gr SPEER DEEP CURL/GOLD DOT BULLETS OVER 27grs OF 296 AND FED 155M PRIMERS IN STARLINE CASES, 85 degrees, 4 SHOTS AVERAGED 1,330fps IN THE 7.5 INCH BISLEY HUNTER, ABOUT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING.

BEEN WANTING TO COMPLETE MY BULLET TESTING WITH A SHOULDER SHOT ON A 100lb PLUS HOG, NO LUCK YET, BUT IF THE CV OR SOMETHING ELSE DOESN'T GET ME, IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME.

Thanks for the update Rey, I was wondering what that load was running. I kept thinking 1400fps or more, but I guess not. Keep us updated if you get that hog.

WHAT IS THE MV OF THAT LOAD? DO YOU GET ANY UNBURNED POWDER?

MV runs around 1250 with no indication of raw powder. Muzzle flash is relatively calm.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 10/31/2020 7:19 PM

HAVE BEEN TRYING TO BLOODY OTHER GUNS MOST OF THIS YEAR SO THE 45 COLT BISLEY HUNTER HAS BEEN ON VACATION. TODAY (10/31/20) I WENT TO MY RANGE ON THE RIO GRANDE TO CHECK SIGHT IN AT 105 YARDS ON A 10 INCH FA 454 (USING OLDER WINCHESTER 300gr AMMO), A 10 INCH CONTENDER IN 45 COLT (USING A 275gr PC'ed SWC HP OVER 19grs OF 2400, CHRONO's 1,375fps) AND THE BISLEY 45 COLT HUNTER. FOR THE HUNTER I HAD MY 250gr GD/DC LOAD OVER 27grs OF 296, PLUS SOME 265gr FUSION BULLETS, SOME SEATED OVER 26.1grs OF 296 AND SOME OVER 27grs OF 296. OFF A REST, AT 25 YARDS, WITH SCOPE SET AT 3x, ALL 3 LOADS WERE ABOUT THE SAME ACCURACY WISE. GOING TO CHRONO THE FUSION 27gr LOAD TOMORROW MORNING, THEN DECIDE WHAT TO USE THIS DEER SEASON. ALL OF THE FUSION LOADS EXTRACTED EASILY, AND WHEN THE BRASS WAS RESIZED ALL FIT EASILY INTO MY SUPER TIGHT JRH BISLEY.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/01/2020 4:34 PM

WENT TO MY RANGE ON THE RIO GRANDE THIS MORNING. BRIGHT SUNNY MORNING WITH THE SUN COMING FROM OVER MY LEFT SHOULDER. NORMALLY IN THESE LIGHT CONDITIONS I CANNOT GET ANY MV READINGS, SO I USED SOME LIGHTS ZIP TIED TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SUNSCREENS, SOMETHING THAT WORKS REAL WELL INDOORS, IN DARKER CONDITIONS, BUT SEEMS TO RESULT IN "WEIRD" READINGS WHEN THE SUN AND THE ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS COMPETE FOR BULLET SHADOW TIME.

I WAS EXPECTING SOMETHING IN THE 1,300's AS THE GOLD DOT LOAD CHRONO'ed 1,330fps. I SHOT THE 27gr W-296 LOAD UNDER THE 265gr FUSION 8 TIMES IN THE BISLEY HUNTER AND GOT READINGS "ALL OVER THE PLACE", AS FOLLOWS: 1114, 1539, 1324, 1257, 1069, 1312, 1190 & 1320, ONE OF THOSE "WTF" EXPERIENCES. AM THINKING THE 1324, 1312 & 1320 READINGS ARE VALID AND THE OTHERS "WHO KNOWS". THEN I SHOT AT THE 6.5 INCH ROUND SWINGER AT 105 YARDS, 3 SHOTS WITH THE GOLD DOT LOAD AND ALL HITS, THEN 3 SHOTS WITH THE FUSION LOAD AND ALL HITS.

THE FUSION BULLET SEATS SHALLOWER AND HAS A LONGER NOSE. AFTER YOU SHOOT 1 OR 2 ROUNDS WITH IT THE NOSE ON THE NEXT ROUND's BULLET IS DEFORMED SOME WITH THE LEAD ON THE NOSE SMEARED BACK SOME. SINCE I BELIEVE THE GOLD DOT AND FUSION LOADS ARE ALMOST TWINS IN ACCURACY AND MV, FOR NOW, BECAUSE OF THE WEIRD NOSE DEFORMATION ON THE FUSIONS, I AM GOING TO STICK WITH THE GOLD DOT LOAD.

BTW, WHEN FEDERAL LOADED THE 265gr FUSION BULLETS IN THE 454, THEY WERE RATED AT 1350fps SO I AM GUESSING THEY ARE PRETTY SOFT.

Re: 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY HUNTER: THE JOURNEY BEGINS - 11/01/2020 6:14 PM

Thanks for the report Rey, I've been following with great interest. I haven't done much work with my Bisley Hunter. I have only developed one load using 335 grain WFN's and HS6 doing a little under 1100 fps. Might try it on a doe, as we have a ton of deer this year.
