anyone shoot a 358 win - 03/05/2020 3:49 AM

would like to hear if anyone is shooting a 358 in a encore or specialty pistol and what kind of performance they are getting

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 03/05/2020 4:02 AM

I had a 356 Win in an Encore. If you do the Encore I think the 356 is best due to the rim. You can also use 358 brass you just need to change the ejector. But if you get 100 rounds of brass you will never wear it out. I shot 180gr Hornady SSPBs and 180 Speer bullets almost exclusively. My barrels were MGM early Shilin blank barrels. I had both rifle and pistol length.
Guns shot 1/2? groups

Had a 15? with brake 15? no brake 20? rifle and 22? rifle

All heavy taper MGM

Killed a bunch of [censored] with the pistol.

Traded the pistol setup for a NIB xp100 in .223 and bought a xp100 custom shop gun in 35 Rem

bug-
what kind of velocity were you getting from your 180's I see in your photo gallery some of your comments if it was within 250 yards it was in trouble. obviously accurate. with the brake how was the recoil?

IN A 14 INCH RPM XL 356 WIN, USING 180gr HORNADY SSP BULLET HANDLOADS I WAS GETTING IN THE 2300-2400fps RANGE, AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT I REMEMBER.

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 03/05/2020 6:48 PM

I have a 15" RPM Hunter in .358 Winchester with an RPM brake that was built for me by Jim Rock. I subsequently returned the gun to Jim and had him cut a rim on the chamber and modify the extractor to accommodate the .356 Winchester rimmed case. Either cartridge can be used in this gun by changing the extractor, or by using a "Merrill rod". Recoil was not bad with the brake and the design of the grip.

200 gr. Factory Silvertip vel. 2215 fps.
200 gr. R-P 200 gr Ptd. SPCL
225 gr. Nosler Partition 48.0 AA-2520 vel.-2238 fps (max load) (F-215 Primer)
250 gr. Speer Hot Cor-very accurate

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 03/06/2020 4:25 PM

I am not really sure on velocity. My guess is 2400ish. The barrel with the brake was my first one. The recoil was not bad for either barrel but the one with the brake was much louder and would blow dust everywhere.

The gun really lost pep after 250 but out to that it was a hammer.

I had several encores over the years the 356 was by far my favorite.

I can't help but wonder how the 350 Remington Magnum would perform in an XP or a custom Encore

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 03/21/2020 4:00 AM

I have a 15.875 MGM SS Encore barrel, with a 4 Gill Brake. I am shooting 180's through it. I have 180 Speer, 180 SSP Hornady's as well as 180 Fury Bullets. I have a Weaver 2.5 - 10X Classic Extreme rifle scope on the barrel. On 2.5X the eye relief is very impressive on the handgun barrel.
I made a 100 yard shot on an eight point this last deer season. That was the first shot deer hunting with this barrel. I was very impressed with the performance of the 356 Winchester.
I have had a 35 Bullberry barrel for my Contender for years. It is impressive also.

I practice out to around 250 yards, however most places I hunt shots are limited to approximately 125 yards.

thank you, i really like the 358 or 375's but looking for something hot. not that the cartridges cant do the job. looking for the one and done big game hammer that i can harness in a handgun and still be practical.

One of our fellow members has a 358 STA. He did a write up on one of the previous pages. This is probably about as much power that can be put in a handgun in the .358 diameter

358 STA [Shooting Times Alaskan] Range Report

15-inch Encore .988? diameter barrel with Fish Gill Brake \ Burris 3x12 \ Warne Steel rings \ SSK 3 screw flat bottom forfend \ 1-14? twist \ Weighs 7.70 pounds.

Brass: Hornady 375 H&H
Primers: CCI-250
Bullets: Hornady 200 SP, Barnes 200 TTSX, Nosler 200 AB, Sierra 225 GK

Accuracy: Outstanding if I do my part

Powders:
A4350, H4350, IMR 4350, IMR 4831, R19, VV N160.
I?ve selected H4350 as it provides the best overall velocity with excellent accuracy.

Picture of my preliminary range work at 50 yards:

Velocity:Recorded by Lab Radar
Hornady 200 SP: 88.0gr H4350 = 2750fs used for sight in
Barnes 200gr TTSX: 88.5.0gr H4350 = 2845fs / 90.0 grains H4350 = 2895fs warm
Pet load = 200gr TTSX 88.5gr H4350 = 2845fs 1.5 inch high at 100Y
Nosler 200gr AB: 88.5gr H4350 = 2830fs
Sierra 225 GK: 86.5 gr = 2666fs / more testing needed

Picture of three rounds at 200 yards, my first shot got away from me to the right while the last two are spot on.

Brass:
Relativity easy to make using 375 H&H Mag. Layne Simpson designed this cartridge with the Remington 8mm Magnum as the parent, 375 H&H is easier to find.

Conclusion:
A bucket list caliber / cartridge now complete
Flat shooting with excellent accuracy
The weight of the Encore and fish gill brake really tame the recoil (love the SSK fish gill brake).

Good shooting

Any of the 35 caliber cartridges mentioned are one and done. IF THE SHOOTER DOES HIS PART.My 358 JDJ worked very well,as does my 35 Rem.

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 04/25/2020 11:38 AM

I agree with Junebug. Any of these rounds will get it done. I have been shooting the 358JDJ in a Contender for 40 years. With proper shot placement it can cleanly take any animal out to 200 yards.

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 04/30/2020 2:07 PM

Hey Dave
I see Franchise posted my notes on the 358 STA, another one I?ll mention is the 35-06 JDJ on the Encore frame. Mine?s a 15-inch barrel with fish-gill brake.

Ballistics:
180 grain weight 2700fs
220 grain weight 2600fs
225 grain weight 2550fs

I have not tried anything heavier than 225 grain weight. Accuracy and terminal performance on deer have been outstanding.

2700 fps with a 180 is kicking it. what do your drops look like at 300-400 yards or havent you shot it that far.

Re: anyone shoot a 358 win - 05/01/2020 5:03 PM

200 yards is the longest distance I have tried (targets). The deer I have taken were under 100 yards. Most my hunting area is dense hardwoods, I'm lucky to see much further than 150 yards on a good day.
