357 mag load with H110 and 158gn XTPs? - 03/21/2020 4:12 PM

Does any one use H110 and the 158gn XTPs in 357Mag and have a favorite load or insight they are willing to share?

I've got the Hornady and Lee Manuals. Hornady's max load is 15.6gn for 1250 with an 8" colt python. Lee's suggested loads range from 15gn to 16.7gh at 1591 with no mention of the platform used to create the data.

edit- This is for use in a Ruger GP100 with a 6" barrel and will be used for general shooting/plinking/practice

Thanks Zee! I'll start somewhere lower and work up to that.

I've been doing more digging and the Hodgdon data (10" barrel) matches the Lee manual for charge and velocities so I think the Lee data above was also a 10" barrel. My Lyman manual (49th) starts at 16.3gn at 1178fps and tops out at 17gn with 1309fps with a 4" barrel and a universal receiver.

I can't remember the exact load data now, but the top end book load of H110 gets me right at 1500 fps in my 6" GP100 with 158 XTP's.

I've used 16.2 gr. WW296 (same as H110) in my two Pythons for with the 158 Sie. JHC for 38+ years. Accurate, not stressing my guns, killing deer out to 90 yds.( some really big WV bucks). Don't think any deer ram more than 10 yds.
Used the same load with 158 XTPs, but they didn't perform nearly as good as the Sierras.

Which 158 XTP are we talking about here? There are two, the flat point and the hollow point. The former is designed for higher velocities (from a carbine, etc.) the other for lower velocities. Their terminal performance may be significantly different in a 6? revolver.

I currently have a bunch of the FP bullets but as stated above, not for hunting. I'm just looking for a cheap but accurate jacketed bullet to shot and started with the XTP bullets I could get at the time.

I just loaded some 158 grain XTP's and some 158 grain A-Frames. I loaded both with 16.1 grains of H-110. I loaded 12 rounds of each. I only had time to try both in my 9" MGM Encore before I got called away. I fired two 3-shot groups with both loads. Using a red dot the XTP's 3- shot groups were 1", and slightly over 1". The A-frames were just over 2" for both groups.
I will try both in my 6" Security Six next outing, and also chronograph out of both guns. As of now, I plan to use the XTP's for deer this fall.
