22 WMR/LR chamber adapter for 223 barrel? - 09/02/2020 1:34 AM

I've had my eye on one of these for a while. Evidently these adapters allow you to use either 22 LR or 22 Magnum rounds out of your 223 Contender or Encore barrel (with a rimfire conversion kit for the latter.). I have a spare 223 factory barrel sitting in my closet that I'm not currently using, and I thought these may be the ticket to increasing its utility.

Has anyone tried chamber adapters like these before? If you have, were they decently accurate? I'd primarily use them for target practice (22 LR), and maybe late-season squirrel hunting (22 WMR) when the lack of tree leaves means longer potential shots.

If they are from a company in Alaska, I have one in .22 LR for my .222 Contender barrel. Had some problem with head spacing using the insert and had to use it on my G2 frame as it's more convenient with the switch on the hammer then turning the screw on the original contender frame.

One issue I had is that the .22 LR did not shoot to point of aim with the scope that was sighted for the .222 round. Guess that's to be expected but it was more off than what I hoped it would be.

All that said, if you do some YouTube research, there are plenty of folks using them that have had no issue and like them. My plan was much like yours, use the .222 for fall turkey but have the insert handy should a squirrel pop up. Don't think I'd feel comfortable doing it after trying it out.

I knew someone that had a .30 carbine adapter for a 30-06. It shot good enough for some serious plinking.

Both .30 carbine and 30-06 are the same bore size. .22 LR and .22 centerfires are different bore sizes.

Will it work - Yes. Is it the best - No. Apart from accuracy issues, you'll also have a leaded barrel to ultra clean before putting .223 through it again.

Why not do the job properly and simply buy a .22 LR, or .22 Mag, barrel for it?

Economics. A pair of adapters to accommodate both cartridges in my current barrel is about $40, compared to two new barrels each at $250-$350.

Personally id have serious doubts the potential accuracy would satisfy me.

I have two of the adapters. When I purchased my Contender barrels from a guy in Alaska I got a .375 JDJ with a full length adapter for 22LR that had a tube all the way to the end of the barrel using a rubber O-Ring to center it for small game, maybe survival I guess and on the 222 Rem Mag barrel is has just the cartridge length adapter for 22lr. I have been thinking about having it re-chambered for 22 WMR if I can find someone to do that.
The tube for the .375JDJ shoots good but I have to hold under the target about 4 inches if I remember correctly. I marked the adapter with white paint dot so I would always insert the same when I shot it. I haven't seen any more of these since I got mine about 10 years back. They may have come from the company in Alaska. I think the company was MCA Sports, Chamber Adapters- Thinking about getting one for my Contender 45-70 to 22WMR.
Here is the link to their site- MCA Sports Chamber Adapters

MCA is the company I purchased my .222 adapter from as well.

I don't think one hole accuracy was what these people intended for these adapters. The are more for dual use of a pistol, rifle or shotgun. With the ..375JDJ it is a little over kill for grouse or rabbit and damned expensive to shoot small game with. When I carry the 375JDJ for hunting elk or whitetail I keep the adapter in my side pocket of my pants if I come on some grouse, squirrel or a rabbit. I keep a round in the adapter with a small piece of tape over it so I can just drop it in the barrel, pull the tape and fire. After getting the adapter set in the barrel after about a box of shells where it shot the same ok group for small game, I marked it so it would always be the same when inserting it. With out changing my scope setting, I can shoot a soda can at 20 steps, using the reticle where it goes from thin to large at the bottom and holding that dead on.
The one for the 222 Rem Mag was touch and go until after about the tenth brand of ammo I found one that shot well.
