470 Capstick - 09/30/2020 12:54 AM

SSK 470 Capstick 15 inch with brake: The barrel arrived last Thursday; too much going on over the weekend to work with it. I was able to get a couple of hours this evening, using Hornady 325 XTP pistol bullets with H4198 to get it on paper.
All loads were sparked by CCI-250s
I make the brass from Hornady 416 Remington Magnum.
Velocity recorded by lab Radar

Preliminary range report:

325 XTP
H4198 78.0 grains = 2369fs

Hawk 350 HP
H4198 76.5 grains = 2301fs

Hawk 400 RT
H335 85.5 grains = 2177fs
IMR4895 83.3 grains = 2052fs
H4895 81.0 grains = 2018fs
H4895 85.0 grains = 2162fs
H4895 87.0 grains = 2228fs
H4895 88.0 grains = 2267fs

Barnes 275 XPB
H4198 80.0 grains = 2387fs

I will work with it and various bullets over the next few weeks so its ready for the fall deer season.
I did not find any of the loads unbearable to shoot, the weight of the gun & brake tame it well.

My last target before dark, the last shot got away from me to the right

Good shooting/Hunting

I like that rig; that is a hand cannon for sure. What will you hunt with it?

In your load data, you show several question marks. Does this mean it is questionable?

Hey Greg, thank you for the comment.

No the data is not questionable, The program added the question marks where I placed dashes when written, I have cleaned that up.

Deer will be up first in November.

Buck,

Let us know how it works on deer! I hope you get a big one and at least give that cartridge a "small" work-out!

lol!

I thought my 416 Taylor was big, but that thing is huge! If you could get 3 or 4 deer to line up you could probably get them all in one shot! Keep us posted.

I don't have the wrists for that anymore, the crazy desire I have, but not the wrists. Good looking rig though.

Thanks everyone for your comments
Will keep you all posted on bullet testing and hunting success. Although I did get skunked last year, so hopefully this year will not be a repeat of last.

Mother of God. Anxious to see some deer hit with that baby. That's a nice weapon.

What muzzle brake are you using? What's the recoil comparable to?

DL
As far as I am aware of the muzzle brake is of SSK own design (fish-gill side to side). I have them added to all my SSK barrels. Some of my earlier smaller caliber barrels have their arrester brake which work well that said, I prefer the fish-gill it really tames the recoil.
As I think about the recoil, I struggle to offer a comparison to something else. Does it snap / turn my wrist? No, like other chamberings setup in the same fashion I find the recoil to come backwards with some lift off the rest. The weight of the complete gun is 8 pounds with a barrel diameter of .988" before the brake. I believe between the two (weight and brake) allows for shooting these big bores effectively. The pachmayr Encore grip doesn't hurt either, it's a shame they discontinued them. I also ware impact gloves to aide in my grip and offer extra padding while on the bench and in the field.
Hope this helps.
