Bullet sizing questions

Bullet sizing questions - 10/05/2020 1:24 AM

Two questions:

1. Has anyone resized .458" bullets down to .451" to .452" diameter?

2. How difficult is it to size down jacketed bullets?

I have never tried this. If I were going to give it a try, I would check into a Lee push through sizing die, and use plenty of lube. If you stuck a bullet it would not be a huge loss.

Chance
I have an article by Layne Simpson from the 2013 American Rifleman titled drawing down jacketed bullets.
This caught my attention as part of the article was drawing down .509 caliber Swift bullets for the 50 B/M Alaskan, where he uses a Corbin draw down die.
The article is in PDF form, if you would like a copy send me an email address and I will forward. Or perhaps try and search for this on the net.

I have some cheap bevel base 300 gr rnfp for that I picked up when I first got into reloading and not knowing any better. I never have been able to get these to shoot well in my guide gun. As proof of concept, I have sized these down to .452. I used a Lee .454 first the a Lee .452 push through die. I had intentions of trying these out in my .454 over Trailboss, but have never gotten around to it.

I have heard of people sizing jacked .310 rifle bullets and .312 pistol bullets down to .308 to shoot out of things like .300BO and .30 Carbine, but have never done such myself.

I have done some step down sizing. You have to do it in steps. It works but it is a pain if you are going more than .002". A very common practice is .452 down to 4.51 and that can be done with the Lee or Saeco push through sizer.

was you able to size down the 410's to 400 in one step or did you have to do it in numerous steps? lead or jacketed bullets? how was the accuracy of the bullets after sizing.

Lead bullets: try NOT sizing the bullets. Sizing does NOT improve accuracy, and the more you size a lead bullet down, the worst the accuracy.
Jacketed bullets: you'll size the jacket and lead core. Jacket will spring out slightly after, leaving a gap between the jacket and core. Not good for accuracy.
