375 JDJ & 6.5 JDJ loads please - 12/27/2021 2:47 AM

I recently picked up a Contender with 375 JDJ & 6.5 JDJ barrels (Both SKS)
The previous owner gave me his 375 load data, but right now I have pretty slim pickings on powder so I'm interested in what everyone else is using. Probably stick in the 270gr area. Really looking forward to playing with this one, mostly thinking moose & bear.

The 6'5 JDJ I'm not quite as excited about. Not sure where it fits in for Alaska hunting. Seems a little marginal for caribou & black bear which are the smallest animals I reguraly get the opportunity to hunt. Some good load data might change my mind.
Also I've been told you can start with 30-30 brass. What's the procedure?

The 6.5jdj uses 225 win brass. Prob hard to find. Should be a lot of info on it with some searching. I cant imagine it wouldnt be enough for animals mentioned……but there should be plenty of users…..somewhere, maybe just not in here. Call SSK ??

Vance, I’ve always kept lots of H4895 around as I use it in MANY large capacity cartridges. Same with 2400 fir most of my revolver rounds.
When I have limited powder, I go thru reloading data, with the powder I do have, compare load data to listed powers, do a comparison (+15%, or -28%) start with the minimum load, and the percentage difference then work up a grain at a time, then shoot for accuracy. Takes time, and may not come up with anything as accurate as the original powder, but “ya gotta do with watcha got”

My ssk 375JDJ load is 49 gr. Reloader 15 260 gr. Nosler Accubond, CCI - 200 primer, 3.00 oal, avg. 1950 FPS.
Shoots one ragged hole at 100

It has taken several hogs, whitetail, and a Bull Elk in NM.

Please use caution and start loads a couple grains lighter to begin

Michael, trust me I am searching locally high & low for 4895! Have been for about a year. Every once in a while I hear "We had 2 pounds for about 15 minutes yesterday..."

Elkdozer, how did the Accubond perform on elk?
I've been watching for reloader 15 for quite a while too for 308 :-(. No luck. I'll keep looking!

It performed excellent. Broke a rib going in, hit both lungs where it did quite a bit of damage then exited so I wasn’t able to recover the bullet unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it.
This was at 91 yards. And about 125 is my self imposed limit on this set up for Elk or anything that big, one of out little Texas Whitetails 200 or so.

I would post a picture or two but I don’t have the apps or whatever that are required

Thank you sir!
That's a bullet I would like to try.

Hodgdon still list load data for 375 JDJ in their pistol data section. They cite a 14" barrel length. I suspect there may be a fair degree of difference depending on what barrel length your gun is. Years back I emailed JD Jones and asked about expected velocities if used in shorter 10" barrels and he wasn't able to estimate.

Thanks Junebug!
Gives me a few more options!
We have 2 stores locally that sell powder & neither of them has had anything I could use for almost a year.

Hate to say it, but start calling stores in Anchorage, find some powder that’s available, purchase it, and do the drive. I always had a list of things to “pick up” in Anchorage, and usually did a Costco trip once a month as well. Ya just can’t get everything you want across the inlet.

I try not to make it to Anchorage often but when I do I check everywhere I can, Great Northern Guns was about the best bet before they closed last fall but theybwould not let you pay by CC and hold it for even a day, Face to face only, I do have friends that check the normal places for me every time they go up,
Sportsmans Warehouse got some in this week but nothing useable in the 375. They did have 1 pound of BLC-2 I can use in the 308 Encore & some H-110. Since you can only purchase 1# total per day I took the BLC-2. If there is any H-110 left tomorrow I will grab a pound.
And nice little earthquake while typing, Guessing about a 5,0, You miss them? :-)

You get so used to the ground wiggling, it’s no big deal. I’ll take earth quakes over tornadoes ripping my roof off any day. Here in Idaho, I at the base of a Granite mountain that’s stood for a million years. About all I get here is some blow down trees in the Forrest in the back 40. I can hop on the log grapple and clear out 40 trees in the morning before I meet my buddies for bbq in town.
With a 1 pound limit, they must still be really short on powders. Gotta get it when you can.
