45 colt plinking load - 07/19/2022 2:09 PM

Hi Folks
I'm looking for recommendations for a standard pressure 45 colt load for plinking and practice (powders and bullets). What do folks think of the copper plated lead bullets? Do they eliminate leading in the barrel or should I find some FMJ bullets? If so would you recommend a source? I was thinking that a ~250gn would be a nice weight, but dont' have any strong preference. I would use these in both pistol and rifle (lever action).

Thanks Kyode
Due to limited component availability these days, all i've got to work with is H110 and Magnum primers. Would one expect to any complications from a coated bullet and H110 at a light load (My contender compendium has several H110 recipes with ~1000-1100 fps velocities and loads down to ~20 grains, My +p load is 26 grains).

Well… PC is a non issue but there are MANY more powders I would reach for. When you “down load” W296/H110 it’s usually not going to give great accuracy or SD numbers as compared to a mid to full power load.

If it is all you have, I get it nowadays, but I can think of many better powders for this and H110 would be one of my last choice… I’d hold out for a faster powder and run those in the mid range not reduced … stick with Mag primer without thought for H110…just my thoughts.

I shoot strictly 335gr LFNGC bullets from Cast Performance. My hot load is with H110, but my light load is with Titegroup. It is so light that kids can shoot it at cans all day long and have a great day with it. I use that load for deer even. But when I get serious about bears, moose, and elk, I use the H110 load. It's a two hander at that point.

You might be careful using reduced loads of H-110. I've read that you should never reduce a load with H-110 more than 5% below the min load. Both squib loads and pressure problems.

For my light loads on the 45 LC I use a lot of HS-6 with a 200 gr cast bullet
