8 IN Encore barrels

Well I've got another question for you guys. I called bullberry barrels today to order a .45 colt barrel and I decided to go with and 8 inch bull, should I have gone with a 10 or will 8 in. be fine. It will not be used for real long distances but I would like to do some hunting with it.

I would have gone 10-12 but you need to do what you will like. 8" should make for a compact platform.

Will it still be ok out to about 50-100 yards or is that pushing it. I know you lose a certain amount of velocity per inches of barrel lost but will it effect it that much.

A lot of that depends on bullet weight and powder choice. I would think that with heavy bullets 300gr+ you would see less velocity loss and you may want to go with a bit faster powder if you use small bullets.

Just a note Bullberry cuts the chambers very tight so you will most likely be stuck with using virgin brass or factory loads to start. Also unless you sent them a loaded round there will be very little freebore in their barrel. This could cause an issue with bullets like the 300gr Sierra.

I have been thinking about ordering an 8" Contender barrel from them. You should get higher velocities than a revolver with a similar length barrel and it will be easier to pack than longer barrels too. I would stick with the 8". The chambering issue H2OBug mentioned sounds like it might be an issue though.

Oh yeah. I have a Bisley 45LC with a 6" tube and I condsider that a 100 yard gun with the red dot sight. I am also trying to think of what I should have my new 8" 'Tender tube chambered in. That 327 Fed sounds interesting, can always use another 41, or maybe 414, hmmm.
