Out playing with the 338AX

Out playing with the 338AX - 01/31/2010 6:27 AM

Got some more shooting and cleaning in today with the 33AX XP-100, with the 300 SMK's. Recoil was noticeably stronger. Shot a couple of 5-shot groups @ 100 yards with groups hovering around 1/2 inch. Shooting off of a bench with a Harris BR bi-pod.

Barrel is cleaning up good now, which is pleasing to see as well.
Don't think this is a prairie dog rig, but I can't wait to get it set-up on steel. Recoil is about twice as much as my 7mm Dakota.

Good shooting Ernie, what barrel did you use on this project? I read your OP on this but can not remember.

I sort of disagree Ernie. I think a dog within 150-200yards is a dead dog. It might not have enough power to reach one much further out, though so I'd keep my shots close. Heck, the 300 grainer might weigh as much as a prarrie dog.

I'd wait for 4 or 5 dogs to line up and drop them all. LOL<LOL

Sounds like it's time to stretch her way out there Ernie!!

Recoil is still below magnum resolver levels, but the most SP recoil I have ever used.

BIG prairie dogs need BIG BULLETS! LOLOL!

From what I see with your postings you have a fine 2000 yard prairie dog load there, yes-seir!

Near Base and Nightforce Rings.
Leupold Mark 4 Rings would also work good-i have those on other rigs

One of my friends who has shot all of my other s SP's, wanted to shoot the AX. I have been keeping it my friend, who is an accuracy smith south of town at first, since he has bore scope.
My friend chose to try shooting the AX free recoil and got smacked pretty hard in the forehead-You Have To Respect The AX!!!

Iv got pain coming dont I? Where did you get your base? Is the one holland have a good base? The adjustable Pic rail.

Re: Out playing with the 338AX - 02/01/2010 5:46 AM

Good base-Yes.
Will it work on a XP-Not sure.
I think the hole pattern may be different.
Need to ask Holland's on that one.
As long as you respect it, you will do fine.
A FA 454 recoils harder to me then the AX, but the recoil is different-hard to explain.
The Huskemaw scope is handling everything fine to date too.

Re: Out playing with the 338AX - 02/01/2010 6:15 AM

How far do you want to be able to shoot?
Call Richard Near and tell him "Hi" for me.
A 20 or 25 MOA base will work great.

Personally for hunting I would go with the FFP (first focal plane) scopes from Darrell.
Either the FFP Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 (best deal for the money)
Or the 3.5-15 FFP NXS
For hunting either will get you where you want to go distance wise for big game.

Re: Out playing with the 338AX - 02/01/2010 6:27 AM

Do I need to send the mount to Kirby or have it mounted when I get the gun?

Re: Out playing with the 338AX - 02/01/2010 6:31 AM

Tell Near that you do not want an extended pic rail but a standard rifle length one.
Send the Base to Kirby and ask/remind him to open up the threads for the next size large threads (he will know what I am talking about. The XP threads are really to small and need to be opened up. Also make sure to tap another hole in the back part of the base.
