Ruger Blackhawk 327 - 04/21/2010 4:41 PM

Anyone have any experience with the blackhawk in 327? Have one ordered and plan to use it as "a pickup gun." Hopefully, it will be about the right medicine for assorted vermin & varmits.

wt,

I have a Ruger and an FA97 in 327 Fed. I worked up loads using H110 and 98 gr cast lfn and Rainier 100 tcjhp. The loads averaged about 1620 fps. in both guns, the FA 4", Ruger 5 1/2". However, the Rainier bullets could not withstand those velocities and fragmented. Rainier recommends < = 1400 fps max. Good advice! Also, loaded ammo and / or brass is difficult to find. Starline is not making brass for it, that leaves Federal only. I got my brass from Freedom Arms for the 224-32 FA. Jacketed 32 cal bullets ( 0.312" ) are impossible to get. Not sure why that would be, but I haven't been able to get ANY jacketed bullets in the 85 to 115 gr range. Nonetheless, it promises to be a great round, the "magnum" the 32 H&R was not.

Thanks Doc,

I too have a FA M97 with a 327 cylinder. However, until this week, I have been unable to get the ammo. Bought 290 rounds of Federal ammo this week -- 250 of the "cheaper (and heavier)" stuff & 40 rounds of the 85 gr.

I really like the M97 with the 32 H&R cylinder but the 327 should be better. Plus, I really hate to carry the FA around in my pickup all of the time. I would not like losing a Ruger to a sticky fingered someone, but would really hate losing a FA.
