400gr speer

have some of these lying around for the 480 ruger was going to load them up. anybody ever tried these?

Haven't tried the 400, but I do like the 325 Speer. No reason why the 400 shouldn't work just fine.

The Speer bullets should work fine. Contrary to what some of the bullet tests the guys on this site have done w/ this bullet on phone books, this is a quality bullet. Paper, dry or wet does not replicate flesh such as muscle tissue.

Swift A-Frame has a 300 grain bullet out know that I'm trying to get my hands on. Always had great luck with em, in my Rifles. I actually used a roadkill Deer that a guy brought me, it was too banged up to eat this past Jan. I set it up on my shooting range behind my house and did some .460 S&W bullet testing at a 100yds. The Deer froze soild over night, the next morning the .275 gr. Barnes X-panders Plowed rite thru both shoulders and 1" plywood backstop like nothing the bullet was never found in the dirt bank, IMHO thats even better than a wet or dry phone book anyday.

well i loaded 100 of these hope to get out this weekend and see if the redhawk likes them.

Jeff, Are you talking about the .44 or .45 caliber A-frame??

I have been doing a lot of reading about reloading for the 480, as well as searching the catalogs for components. The Speer Bullets are the cheapest jacketed bullets I have found. They are also rated higher than the XTP bullets from what I have found out. The Speer bullets are something like $20.79/50 while the last 400 XTP's my store got were marked $34.95/50. That is a very big difference. At $0.42 a bullet I can almost bring myself to buy bullets to reload.
I am seriously considering the Speer 325 grain "Deep Curl" Bullets for my Deer Hunting Load. I believe the Speer 325 and 400 grain are an Expanding Soft Point with the new Deep Curl design. I presume that means they petal out on impact.

On the Graf and Son web site I found Speer 480 brass today in stock $32.99/100. That is cheaper than Starline, and MUCH cheaper than Hornady. Wish I had found this out sooner, I just bought 300 pieces of Hornady brass. I think I will get a couple hundred pieces of Speer brass bought up shortly just to have on hand.

I have put a 400 grain Speer through a cow elk. While it is a jacketed bullet, it did not expand much at all.

Looks like Speer has the 275 Gold Dot HP and 325 SP DeepCurl listed for 480 Ruger, and the 400 SP DeepCurl listed for 475 Linebaugh. I believe this is the same story as with the Hornady XTP bullets. The 400's need a little more speed than a 480 Ruger to work best.
I have a box of 400 XTP's I will probably shoot up in practice some day, as I do not have anyone handy that I know of with a 475 Linebaugh to trade them to.

That big bullet doesn't "need" to work. If it goes all the way through without expanding, fine, just like a solid or "cast" would. Give them a try before you give up on them.

The information sheet on the 400 gr. Speer bullet states that little, or no, expansion will be experienced in the 480 Ruger. In effect, it performs pretty much like a hard case bullet.
