Weatherby calibers in the Encore - 11/29/2010 5:30 PM

Anyone tried any of the weatherby calibers in the encore. I'm looking at the 240 Wby mag.. I saw Bullberry and SSK offer it but I heard that it can hurt the frame with factory loads and only lighter handloads can be used safely. If anyone has tried them how do they compare to the factory barrels in 243 or 25-06? Any ideas or information is greatly appreciated.

348,
Welcome to HH!
Personally I would not recommend the Weatherby cases for the Encore.
With the head size of the case, it just creates more back thrust, and more flexing of the frame, and case stretch/case head separation possibilities.
Why have a case that you cannot utilize?
Some of my favorite hot-rod cartridges for the Encore would include:
Anything based on the 308 Winchester family included all of the improved versions (not real hot-rods but great cartridges).
Anything based of of the 284 Winchester (Winchester brass)or the 6.5-284 (Lapua brass).
The 06 family and its improved versions.
Personally, I would not go above the 30-06/308 head size in a Encore.

I have a 15" 240 Wby Mag Encore barrel made by Bullberry. It is fast and accurate. You will be fine with the 240, the case head is the same size as a 30-06 case. They don't jump up until the 257 Wby. Go for it, I love mine.

Thanks Shawn!
I knew one or two of the cases were smaller, but couldn't remember for sure.
