Did some calcs. a couple days ago just screwing around with the math for attempting LR 1st shot connections. Using my Ruger Mk. III the sight radius is 7.9" as measured with a caliper to the back of the front sight. The top to bottom of the front sight blade is .25". So to convert to MOA-- .25/7.9 = X/3600 = 114 inch per hundred yds./1.047 = ~100 MOA. Well my gunsmith and i didn't take into account the angle of the ramp--but that's no big deal since i already have 3 25 MOA units to play with (.055" per unit), which is more than any 22 rimfire can use probably. Here's the FS alteration--

I really love playing with the math on this stuff, and have already learned how easy it is to calculate the MOA from sight radius and vertical blade measurement. It could easily be done with the dot sights on some of the pistols as well, no doubt. In fact those short front blades that are used on some of the SA's would be a perfect match for this system--i'd bet.

What's the end result of all this some may be asking? I want to make a 1st-shot connection at 200 yds. on a 12" steel plate with my pistola'. Probably no big deal for some of the IHMSA guys--but for me--it's a big deal. Anyone else ever attempt this kinda' stuff with the front sight?

Here's te link to Ed Wosika's article i used for reference. Got this info from someone here on this site too--thks.!

Steve you have to much time on your hands.

Guns are awsome, guns are fun, pull the trigger and it's all done.

I used a sliver of brass with black lines on my old long range 44 mag BH--Set up looks very close

I used liquid paper and a pen to get mine close then cut the brass sliver and marked it--bit of epoxy and did just fine.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I used white lines on my RSBH 357mag. Only I didn't use that there new fangled mathamagician fancy stuff. I used kentucky windage to set my lines!

It really is fun shooting long range with open sited handguns!!

I used that long ago in the 50's when I could see I had a front sight. Worked great on the .44 BH.
Now with a red dot on my Mark II using a 25 yd setting will put me 53" low at 200. I just set a target that high over the steel and can clang it most times.

I understand the "big clicks" in the article, but can anybody that has this setup explain how the little clicks can actually work? The angle of the handgun stays the same, you're only raising it a fraction of an inch and keeping it otherwise level to get the little click. Seems like it would not work mathematically?

Since the range I shoot at only goes to 100yds, I find that ANY front sight (that I can perceive) showing above the rear blade puts me wayyyy too high.

I did my old .44 blacktop with silver wire. But I used tape to determine the line first with my load. Easy to change the tape until the right spot is reached.
Never change boolits or loads, works only with one.

The system should work like an optic's multi-stadia reticle in MOA, since each of those lines has some MOA value--but i also don't undertsand the little click value--for the life of me i can't null out the math on it. Been gone for awhile so i need to relook at it again (for the 10th time).
