Are any of you turkey hunting yet? What are you using this year?

The season has been open since April 9th but it's been snowing almost every day. Fore cast calls for snow/rain till sat. Maybe we will get some good weather after that.

I'll be using one of the following (depending on the situation) my FA 454, Ruger SS in 32 H&R mag, and an encore 22 Hornet for the longer shots.

MS season has been open since 19 March and I've only had the opportunity to go ONCE....but... I was carrying my 20ga Encore pistol, just didn't get to use it and don't know if I will this year.

I called in a nice gobbler (over 20 lbs.--11 inch beard) this morning. Mrs. Hampton dropped him at 37 steps. She was excited! Now you know what we're having for supper. Shotgun only here in Missouri.

Good luck to all you turkey hunters.

I do not hunt turkey, but I have a turkey story for you. I live in the Texas Panhandle where trees do grow wild and it is mostly irrigated farmland. I did not know that there were any wild turkey around here. However, a couple of days ago a gobbler & five hens were walking down the middle of US Hwy 385 in front of my house (about 1/2 mile outside the city limits). I had to stop and the car that was going south also stopped to allow them to wander to the side of the road.

Today at noon I went home and noticed them in the wheat field just north of my barn. I was in the house and had the wooden back door open --- just the glass storm door was closed. I heard a noise and looked out. The gobbler was standing on my porch, looking at his reflection in the storm door and was not happy. He started flogging the door and pecking it. I thought it was pretty funny so I walked right up to the door. When he would peck the glass I would tap right back at him with my finger on the glass. He was getting more upset and really started fighting the door. Finally, I decided to run him off for fear that he would break the glass.

Pretty enjoyable lunch period today.

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

My season started on the 18th and we ended up with about 3" of snow. It's melted already. I'm hoping to get back out this Friday. I'll be using a Mossberg 12ga.

I figure that's justification for a shooting in Texas!

I do hunt turkeys, and unfortunately handguns are not legal weapons for the pursuit of the thunder chicken in NC or SC...so they forced me to break out the long gun. Benelli M1 Super 90 12 ga with #5's - 9" beard and 1" spurs.

Our season started saturday with rain and 40 mph wind. Sunday I killed a 23 lb.bird with 2 beards, one 11 in and a smallerat 8 3 /4 in.
1 in. spurs. Shotguns or archery only here, so the 870 20 ga with # 6 heavy shot. Missed two yesterday with a bow, shot under both ,same dumb mistake wrong pin.

This coming Monday I will be out with the bow in Massachusetts and then Wednesday for opening day in Connecticut with the bow as well. Unfortunately it is bow or shotgun in all of New England, New York and for the spring in Pennsylvania.

It would be nice to see a list of states that allow handguns for wild turkey posted.

My season is coming up ... April 27th through May 1st. Shotgun or archery here. I wish they would open it up to handguns, but I have never even heard rumor of that happening. I will be using my Benelli Super Black Eagle. 12 gauge with Federal 3" #4's with the flight control wads.

Probably start to drive the wife crazy this weekend practicing with my calls!

Here is a picture of the bird I got last Saturday in Northeastern Wyoming. Weather here hasn't been great either, everything is still wet with snow most of the time.
I took this Wyoming tom at 30 yards with my Ruger Super Redhawk. First blood on the gun and my first handgun kill. I am excited for the fall to get here.

Been messin' with them with a bow since March 25. Passed up several "gimme" shots from my deck.( I live on 40 acres and hunt the heck out it as well as my neighbor's 160 acres.) I'm headed to the Nebraska National Forest (Yes, forest.) in the central part of the state next week with my shotgun. Time to get serious. A friend of mine saw a nice gobbler on the lawn of our state capitol. Yep, Nebraska has turkeys. Sure wish we could use handguns.

Tom

It's all good: handgun, rifle and bow.

06 Shooter...I am envious.

Two things I would really like...a Merriam's turkey and to get to hunt with a handgun! Congratulations on that one.

My wife and I both have gotten one so far in Missouri. Can't go after another until next week. She called in 3 gobblers, filmed them, and then shot one.

Dan

Alabama allows turkey hunting with handguns with these provisions- centerfire, expanding bullets, and iron sights. I've been successful one time using a Taurus Tracker .357 with 140 grain leverevolution bullets at 1365 fps. I thought a minimum of expansion would be the way to go, but a center of chest shot required a second shot to the neck. This year I set up a 14 inch .223 Contender for more accuracy and expansion but the birds would not cooperate. I would love to hear others experiences with bullets and birds.
