We went hog hunting last evening but the big boy didn't present a shot...dang it. But here's what we were using. Top down: Ruger .44 Magnum Magnaport Predator, .500 Linebaugh (John L.), and my FA .44 Magnum.

That Predator looks awesome. I've wanted one for a long time.

I would love to have another FA, but they are the same price as a deer hunting trip...I hate having to choose. Any members out there independently wealthy and want to adopt a 36 year old, worn out Marine with a severe handgun addiction? Nice collection!

I too am a worn out Marine, but not independently wealthy. What I can offer is a support group. I too need help.......
Beautiful revolvers, Gary!
So how did the hunt go?

The hunting was a challenge. We were hunting at night with my first try at hog lights. The hogs weren't used to the light and were pretty spooky. Only really had a shot at one but we were waiting for the beast. We saw him but couldn't get a shot. I think they just need time to get used to the light.

Gary Is the light Red?? If not take a Marks-a-lot and color the bulb red This helps with the glare and they are less spookey.
We have also used LED rope lights with good sucess.
Keep in mind you need just enough light to shoot.
Just a sugestion
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

The light is green and it's on a photo cell so it comes on when it gets dark. It's mounted on a post next to the feeder.

We have had the best sucess on bait spots with the LED rope lights--the have a very low amp draw This helps in that we are using a 12V deep cycle battery and a inverter.. We are working on a lightweight system that uses marine LED deck light this is a very low amp draw and can be charged during the day with a small solar cell. We bought the Light packs for $6 ea. on sale at Achedemy and wired them to a 12v gell cell with a fence charger photo cell.
It is all on small brackets that we attach to the trees with drywall screws Takes about 10 min to set up
We use this set-up when we dig the bait holes
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I'm using an elusive wildlife technologies green kill light. It draws 390 mA and while I'm still testing the whole power thing, I think I'm going to be able to keep it working with a 7.5ah-20 hour battery and a small solar cell. I could use a deep cycle but they are not as portable. My whole deal fits on top of a t-post. I'll post some pics tonight.

It didn't spook the hog I shot.

That's doubtful, they're from Texas.......LOL!
Have you tried using the Kill Light that mounts to your gun's scope? I used an XLR 100 (in red) on top of my Ultradot. I got one in green now that I am going to try out next month, when I go out for the next hunt.

Two problems with gun mounted lights. 1. After the first shot you can't see shite because there is enough smoke to block your vision and 2. If you're shooting at the same group of pigs or if they've been shot with an instant on light they will haul the bacon when the light comes on - they learn quickly. The best option is NV.

Have you tried them? The outfit I hunt with regularly in North Carolina hands them out to everyone hunting there and they have been very successful. Smoke wasn't a problem at all. Worked well for me about six weeks ago. Here's the result: Night vision is fairly cost prohibitive for a lot of folks.

Smart hogs are exactly that...I watched big pigs come out of the woods to a dirt road and stop and look both ways before running accross to the safety of the trees....

Here is the hog light setup. It will slide down over the top of a t-post about 6-8 inches putting the light about 6-7ft up. The light is wrapped in hardware cloth to keep critters from chewing it up and I've got flexible conduit running the wires to the battery and solar panel. The battery is in the box. The light is one from Elusive Wildlife technologies.

Here is a fairly new technology that I have been keeping track of for a few years; this is at least the second generation style; but I have not yet bought one. Kind of spendy but not anything like Night Vision costs. From what I understand, the tiny beam of the green laser is a lot harder for the animal to detect than a big spotlight beam, yet it still lights them up to the shooter. http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=730675The mount can be fitted to any scope with a one inch tube. Note the review given by a pig hunter.

Whit, Similar, but the EWP throws a wide light beam that gets wider the further it goes whereas the ND 3X40 laser light throws a tiny beam that stays the same diameter as the lens no matter how far it goes. The claim for the laser is a range of hundreds of yards. And because it stays tiny it is difficult to detect vs. being completely enveloped in a big light beam. Again, I have only read about it and not tried it.

Too bad you cannot lace some hog feed with something that would make them glow in the dark.
