Hello Fellow handgun hunters, I just read the deer hunting with the .357 thread. I must say it was very interesting and was wondering what factory round you all would recommend for hog hunting? I have decieded to go with a heavy 180gr round and have further narrowed it down to either the federal core cast or the buffalo bore, I am leaning more for the buffalo bore given the good write up a hunter reported on their site, the hunter reported using the heavy 180gr ammo in his handgun to kill a 300lb hog with great rsults.I am curious if any of you have used the federal and how it performed, also if given the choice which would you go with the buffalo bore or the federal cast core ammo? thanks for reading and for your input....

I've used ammo from both, but not in the 357. One thing is for certain, the Buff Bore will be loaded hotter than the Fed, or any other factory fodder for than matter. Hogs are much tougher than deer, more is better.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

s4s4u,I agree, I don't know all that much regarding the federal cast core but have researched the buffalo bore and have read that it is loaded pretty hot, which is why I am leaning towards using this round for hog hunting... And your right I understand that a hog is much tougher than a deer, althoug not indestructable but tougher. I plan on getting within a safe kill range (50-60yrds) along with good shot placement either a head or neck shot to insure the hog goes down fast and hard without the risk of wounding the hog and have it run off to be lost in the brush.

Another option would be the Double Tap 200gr WFNGC (1315 fps out of a 6" barrel). The Federal Cast Core has been very difficult to get around here for the last year or so. Double Tap is always available.
If I was looking to hunt hogs with a .357, I think I would be looking for something like a typical archery shot (slightly quartering away, just behind the front leg). That will get you both lungs and probably the offside shoulder. Make this shot and the hog will be good as dead.
You probably could break the front shoulders with the 200gr round if you were close enough (20-30 yards) on a directly broadside shot, however I don't have enough experience with that round and caliber on hogs to say for sure.

That 200 grain load that Redline speaks of is a good one. It is more than up to the task. I personally like bigger bores as I like making bigger holes. That said, if you do your part, the .357 is more than up to the task loaded correctly.

Warren, Great story thanks for sharing, you shot a nice pig there and you also have an awesome revolver...I think I remember reading your story back when it first came out and was admiring that revolver when I first time I saw it. Whitworth, I too like the bigger bore also but a couple years ago we had a break in and the thieving SOB's stole my pistols which inclued my ruger blackhawk in .41mag, my ruger superblackhawk in .44mag, along with my .45colt clone from EAA, so now all I have left is my .357mag as I still have not yet been able to replace those pistols that took me so long to aquire. Redline, thanks for the advice on the Double Tap,I hadn't even considered them. I had looked over at their ammo a few weeks back but recently it slipped my mind to give them any serious consideration. I will look into them again and do a little more research on thier ammo.So now I am have another option to go with besides just the buffalo bore. Thanks again for all your advice and if you happen to have any more options or advice to share please do so as it is always appreciated...

that 200 gr.WFN sounds like a bad dude.I used Federals 180gn. hollowpoint on a 200lbs. buck, shot him in the left ham and the bullet penetrated through to the right shoulder ,blowing through that, leaving most of an exit hole in the hide in front of the right shoulder,an the bullet was barely hanging to a little bit of hide, needless to say the deer went 30 yards and piled up.

I have used bundles of Double Tap ammo and that 200 grain load is effective from what I have heard.

Just out of interest, what would the more lethal type of projectile be for a .357mag on big hogs? Jacketed hollow points or cast lead?

If the hog is big and has a thick gristle plate, I would much rather have a good, heavy, flat-nosed hardcast bullet. You won't have to be as concerned about your shot angle (still need to hit vitals, obviously, but you won't have to avoid heavy bone). JMHO.

Whitworth,Thanks for your reply, from the way it sounds the 200gr will be quit effective on hogs and just what I need for my .357. I think I will buy a box and give them a try...
