Well, Where to begin? Had been trying to set up a Hog hunt for my son and my daughters boy friend.Got a call from Franchise and he tells me hes headed to Fl to tackle a big one. He told me JamesfromJersey was coming as well. So I checked into the place where they were headed. Called the Hurleys and sounded good for a hog hunt for the two beginners. Another buddy of mine tagged along with another friend of ours son. So it looked like 5 hogs were going to find their way back to NC. We arrived Friday evening and got situated in our cabin. We ventured over to where James and David had their hog and buff hanging. Both were fine trophies. I have never seen teeth as long as those on Davids Hog. Truly a trophy. Saturday found our gang chomping at the bit. I was looking forward to crawling through the swamps. Having grown up in S Fl I spent my youth in the Everglades. So this was like reliving my childhood. We spent hours upon hours in the Fl heat never seeing a single hog. Knocked off for lunch and got to meet James. Other then the language barrier between a southern boy and the Jersey wildman James fit right in with our group. James, looking forward to many more trips with ya bubba!
Well after lunch we were right back at it tromping thru swamp after swamp after swamp. Never seeing a single hog. The dogs were getting over heated late in the afternoon. Around sunset we spotted a Buffalo, the last on the plantation. Took some pictures and decided to let my son have a go at it. We discussed it with the guides and off we went looking for him. After driving for a while we came across the buff. My son and I exited the truck and closed the distance to 20-25 yards. Before we were set up I had a talk with my son about standing his ground and no matter what making every shot count. He assured me he understood. So there we were ready to shoot. He made the shot and kept shooting. At the first shot the Buff looked like it was going down then popped up and charged us. We both let loose and turned the buff. The last round fired broke its back and it went down. The guide kept trying to move me out of the way but I wasn't going to leave my sons side. It was over in a flash. That was my sons first handgun kill. I was hoping to start him out on something more reasonable like a meat hog, but what the heck, I went for broke and now we have another handgunner in the family. Keeping the sport alive. Thats what its all about. I will remember that day for the rest of my life.
A big thank you to David and his wife for taking the photos. They are two of the nicest folks I have come across in a long time. David, get ahold of James, we need to do this again!

Wow, what a first kill. You are gonna have a time topping that. My first whitetail was a 10 point monster, been downhill ever since. Congrats.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Outstanding!! Wonderful story, thanks for sharing!

If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

Fish,

Absolutely fantastic! I'd venture a guess to say that your son is kinda hooked now, huh?

Gonna be hard to match the excitement and adrenaline overload from a charging bison...but it'll be fun trying!

Congratulations again!

SC, yep all I here about is when can we do it again. He is already layed claim to my 480 and can't wait till deer season starts. He has already started figuring ways to earn money this summer so he can go on another hunt. He is definately motivated.
Ernie I belayed it to him this morning.

Talk about getting someone hooked! BRAVO ZULU!!!

There is something to be said about a young man who can stand his ground against his quarry. A man among men indeed.
