I am running a 4x Simmons scope on my Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 casull and I cannot get the thing to zero properly. This is the second Simmons scope that this gun has had on it, first one was doing the same thing so I sent it back and got a replacement, company never gave details as to what was wrong with the first one. My issues are not for lack of trying, at just over 20 yards I ran the elevation from top to bottom with only a one inch shift in POI with a cluster of 7 running in a ragged line horizontally.
Anyone else have issues with this brand, or suggestions as to what to try next?

Thanks

How are you resting your gun? If you are resting it on a bag or rest and have your hand on the table or the butt of the gun on the rest you will get verticle stringing like that. It may not be a scope issue. I would suggest shooting it off a back pack or bag while you are prone and don't rest your hand or the grip on anything. The prone position will keep you stable.

My bad Sorry, I see its horizontal and not vertical. What bases are you running.

Bladesmith, I would get rid of the Simmons & at least buy a Weaver for it. I had a 2x Weaver on my 454 and never had any problems.

cfish2, I have a rail adapter on which I used a set of Simmons rings. Also I was not resting on anything, I had adjusted the scope using some 45colt loads to get it close by bracing off a tree before (couple weeks back). When I ran this gun with no scope I could cluster the 454's into a rough 2" group at 20 yards.

Also I forgot to mention this, I used a laser boresighter and confirmed that the cross hairs were moving just not the POI.

mikefrompa, thanks for the suggestion.

My thoughts lean towards the base. I know several folks who have had simmons on some large caliber guns and run them with success. I would try re setting your base using loc tite. Also are you able to check the alignment of your bottom rings when they are mounted? Sometimes if those bottom rings are out of alignment your scope will never stay sighted in. If you re check everything and still have problems I would look into a different base and scope set up.

I had a Tasco World Class scope/4X on my .454 and the thing lasted all of two months/shooting Mag Techs 260 gr. softpoints-1860 f.p.s. I put an Ultra-dot scope on it in 2000,so it has been doing great for the last 11 years.

I have the Simmons Pro Hunter 2x6, and it works great. Used it with a 454 barrel, and now it's on my 7 08 barrel. I better knock on some wood, but it has worked great so far.

I have had several about 50% went south most on bigger guns---On .22lr's no issues.

I have one on a 44 now -- no issues as of yet--it only has about 50 rnds down the tube

I find their service is soso at best.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Well just wanted to post an update.

I remounted the scope using the original Ruger rings and the scope is still not working. Guess for right now I will just stick with the good old iron sights (2"spread at 40 yards resting on my knees).

Thanks to every one for the suggestions and recommendations.

The first handgun I ever scoped was a SBH 44 and I put a Tasco on it. The Tasco lasted one cylinder and went black. The next scope was a Simmons and that lasted maybe half a dozen cylinders before it was junk and since then I go Leupold first and then Bushnell (Elite), Weaver, T/C and Burris in that order. The only reason Burris isn't higher up is that I don't like the physical design of them and in the past couple years they seem to be having quality issues.
