I just found out that I drew a ram tag for areas S1,S18, and S40 in north central Colorado. I am still in shock and my mind is a whirl. This is my 10th year putting in for the tag and I thought that I would never draw the tag. There are only two of them given out. I need to get my thoughts together and form a plan man! Any suggestions on where I should start? YIPPEE SKIPPY!

THAT IS AWESOME!!

Are you going with a “do it your self” hunt or guided?

I'm not sure. My intention before I drew the tag was to go it alone but that is a big area with rough country and access is mainly by trail I believe. I have the summer to scout some as the units are a few hours drive from where I live. Now that I have the tag the game has changed. At this point I will at least entertain the outfitter idea. This is a once in a lifetime deal for me!

Congrats!!!!

As to where to start, I'd say on the mountain bike, in the gym, & on the localk mountain trails with a backpack 5 days a week!

Congratulations! Hopefully the MOA will be ready in time for you to practice, practice, practice...print out a picture of a full curl ram and put it on the treadmill - that should be motivation enough through the summer to get you geared up physically...

And enjoy the anticipation!

I had been setting aside money for an Alaskan moose hunt. This tag was a complete surprise but now I intend to funnel some of that money to the sheep hunt. At 62 years old this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I want to invest in and do right. I am presently trying to explore outfitter options.

Vance, I have been riding a bike 45-60 minutes a day for 20 years and lifting weights for the past 5 years. I'll pick up the pace but I feel pretty good about my level of fitness. Some high altitude scouting will fill in the gaps.

Recoil, I have a good friend in the Denver area that has hunted sheep, and I think a ram in CO. I'm pretty sure he did the hunts on his own. I have photos of his hunts here above my computer on my wall of fame billboard formy buddies. I gave him the info on your draw areas and asked him to contact you if he has some good info. He is a hunting nut. I hunted with him when he lived here in Oklahoma and he and a couple of his buddies took me on my first Antelope hunt in Wyoming. We all took nice goats. He is younger than us but very savvy on hunting and has a good head on him.
Hope he can help.

Mike

Hey Recoil, when I lived in Ft.Collins, I use to hike all over those areas. Twenty five years ago those areas held quite a large number of rams. I have tons of pics of some huge rams. If I can dig them out I will post them. One of the biologists at CSU, where I graduated from, saw my pics and went crazy over the full curl and then some of one of the rams I took pics of. You are living my dream. I hope you are succesful beyond your dreams.

Congrats!! I love to Sheep Hunt more than any other type of hunting. I plan on being in the Sheep Mtns August 8th. The way I see it the most important place to start is by getting in "sheep shape" and having a good pair of well broken in boots. If you aren't in shape and don't have good boots then it doesn't matter what kind of a gun you have or how good you can shoot it. Then come optics. Nothing else matters if you can't get to em and then spot em. Here's my "priority list"

Sheep Shape/Boots (gotta get to the sheep) Get out and hike hills/mtns with a pack.
Optics- buy the optics you cannot afford (gotta find the sheep)
Firearm/marksmanship (gotta shoot the sheep)
A pack that will handle 120+ lb load (gotta pack your gear and the sheep)
A bomber tent and good sleeping bag (gotta survive if a storm pins you down)

Lots of good sheep hunting gear/info over at http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/

I've made contact with an outfitter who has hunted the area and has had good success there. As a matter of fact he happens to live in one of the areas. I have not talked directly with him as he is presently in Alaska guiding a brown bear hunt. He called me with his satellite phone Saturday afternoon. The problem is that I was taking a bike ride and my cell phone was in my bike bag. By the time I got to my phone it was too late. He had left me a message. He is excited to help me out because he knows what a good tag this is. He will be back in Colorado on 5/22 so I want to get with him soon after that and talk details. This obviously is not a slam dunk because I do not know what his fee will be. I will stretch my budget a bit if it looks like he can help me strike pay dirt on this.
