I'm going hog hunting in MO in two weeks. I just bought a 15" .223 Encore pistol barrel with a 2-7X32 scope. I'll be using 62 grn bonded soft points. How far should I limit my shots to? I was thinking 100 yds or less. I will also be taking my .308 rifle and my glock .357 sig for a backup or kill shots.

I don't know much about the 62gr. bullet that your going to use but I know Barnes makes a good bullet-52 or 53 gr., that'll stay intact,Speer makes a 70 gr. softpoint that would work too-good luck.

The main thing I am concerned about is the accuracy. If you barrel will shoot them that is awesome, and some people can get them to shoot. Just realize TC’s factory barrels usually will not stabilize anything heavier than a 55gr.

BTW, good luck AND WE WANT PICTURES!!!

+1 on staying with a lighter bullet. Most .223 T/C bbls are very slow twist and the slower velocity from a short bbl only makes stabilization more difficult. The Nosler Partition has a strong following in the .223.

Where are you hunting in MO? I hear there are a lot of piggies down by the Ozarks, but have never got around to finding out for myself.

We will be hunting near Arnold MO. At a place called Dakel Ranch.

Thanks for all the help. If my scope comes in soon I'll take my 454 with me.

I will let you know how it goes.

A 223, 357 Sig, 308 & a 454...I think you're ready! Hope you get a pig with each one of them. Good luck!

Layne Simpson-Shooting Times, had a great article on using the .22 centerfires for deersize game and had quite a few bullets that the manufacturers are making just for game the size of deer and hogs that will hold together. The Sierra 63 gr. bullet is one of those listed.I've shot muskrats with them and their not explosive, they drill right threw them buggars-I wrote to Sierra about this bullet and they said it could be used on deer.

Got back Monday. It was to hot and the under growth was so thick you couldn't see ten feet. We did hear one and got with in 20 yards (I think) but never did see it. We also sat up all night for two nights watching feeders. Saw one deer. We still had a good time. Looking forward to going back. Only this time we will be going in the early spring or late fall.

December/January is great weather for the hogs. Once it cools down, you can really start to see them....Sorry no one connected but the trip is 3/4 the fun
