I know it's been discussed on here before but I searched and couldn't find it.

If a guy bought a T/C frame used (rifle or pistol) could he designate it on the 4473 or does the ATF go buy the factory designation/serial number?

Furthermore, if he used it as a pistol with barrels longer than 16 inches, what difference would it make? Legal or not Legal?

Frames are basically designated by the manufacturer, and indicated by the furniture they come with.

Officially, once you put a buttstock on a frame it is then and forever will be a rifle. You can put any length barrel on a pistol without issue, and if long enough it may qualify as a rifle if you have a rifle frame. If you put a barrel shorter than 16" on a rifle there are issues.

In reality, it is unlikely that the rifle/pistol frame issue will ever come up, but better safe than sorry.

One state in particular, NY, does not allow hunting with a pistol with a barrel over 16" long.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Thank you sir. I'll probably just buy a new pistol frame to add with the others. I noticed T/C is making the Weathershield models now and found one that came as a rifle.

How is the rib attached? I think some used the same holes as the sights and scope base use. Have you tried to remove it? Perhaps someone makes a base that would clamp onto the rib but I haven't seen such a thing.

Picked up another Encore pistol frame today. So I'm still "LEGAL".

Does anybody have a MOA they might want to part with?
