I've recently acquired a Ruger Vaquero Bisley 44 Special and would appreciate input on loads for deer and hogs. How does it compare to the 41 mag? Lots of articles for cowboy action shooters but not much on hunting loads. I'm new to the site and I have to say this is a great bunch of hard core shooters. Many thanks.

Howdy and welcome aboard John!
Do you handload?
Duane
I have a recipe for a 44sp using H110 and a 240 Magtech loaded on the 2nd crimp line. It has shot well in my Ruger SBH’s.

Hi, Duane. That's got to be the fastest response I've had. Yes I reload, but never for handgun. Obviously it's time to start. Thanks. John

These are handloads developed at +P levels to try and duplicate Elmer Keiths 1200 fps from a 4" revolver with a 250gr Keith cast bullet achieved with 17.5gr of 2400. This load when duplicated with modern 2400 from two different lots produced consistent avg of 1150 fps.
4" M29-2 2400 17.0 1076 17.5 1101 H110 17.0 884 17.5 950 18.0 983 19.0 1060 19.5 1079 20.0* 1086 Lil'Gun 16.0 972 16.5 1049 17.0 1075 17.5 1103 18.0 1108 18.5 1123 19.0* 1146 Blue Dot 13.5**1119
* showed more pressure signs than original load with 2400. ** showed flattened primers and highest pressure signs.

by the way welcome and in the interest of full disclosure I haven't tried these loads but any one of them should be adequate for what your looking for.

While I don't have a .44spl, I have shot quite few handloads with 240-250gr SWCs over "Skeeters load". Something like 7.0-7.5gr Unique. Real nice shooting, accurate load. Somewhere in the 900fps range.
Another is 5.2gr Greendot. Feels about like a 1911 recoil. Probably in the 800fps range. Shoots ragged holes at 25yds. Have taken deer with this load.
