I haven't heard too much about this gun/caliber. Is it a solution for a problem that didn't exist, or is it worthwhile? Is it headed down the road of obsolescence? Does anyone out there shoot one? If so, in what? How is the performance? Just shopping around; always looking to try something new.

Bought One... Shot it 12 times, only 12 times... Sold it ! Had it 1 week. The recoil wasn't worth it for me. It was a Super Redhawk. Good Luck. BG

Haven't shot the .480 but have shot the .475 linebaugh. The .480 is a great back-up caliber but is is too big for deer sized game and too small for gangerous game but for a mild recoiling big bore toy its great.

I have a 480 in a Super Redhawk. I like it a-lot. It's taken 3 deer and 10 woodchucks. It's a little big for deer sized game, but man does it hammer them. I hope the 480 is not headed for obsolescence.

This is just my opinion. From a confirmed magnum maniac. I think Ruger did themselves a disservice by not chambering their Super Blackhawk and Super Redhawk in 475 linebaugh.

I would never buy a .480. Instead, I would by a .475. This way I could shoot .480s in it then go to the .475 if needed.

I'v seen what the 480 can do...I saw a test of cast booties shot out of a .475 and a 480 the 480 more than held it's own. I had a 10" 480 in the Encore wish I still had it!

I have thought a few times about getting the 480 Ruger, but then I consider the fact that I have the 454 I ask my self why? I agree with osok that Ruger should have either (a) Built a SBH in 475 Linbaugh or (b) at least the 480 Ruger in the SBH. We'll see the future holds on that front.

I have a a Raging Bull .480 for almost 2 years. Would not hunt with anything else. You can reduce recoil by loading light or by loading Speer 275 gr. They kick less then the Speer 400 gr. and adds to the enjoyment. Scoped it with a Leupold 4x, I love it. It needs a S&W .500 as a big brother.

I've got the Ruger and I like it a lot. It's different for everybody, but the recoil level is about as much as I can take for an extended shooting session. As far as being too much for deer, so is a .454 and I bet most of them are used for deer hunting, too. My thin excuse for buying one is to use it for hogs. It may not be perfect for grizzlies, but it's pretty close for pigs! - KAL

.480 Ruger and .454 Casull too much for deer . I ask, how much gun is too much gun for deer? Or is it too much gun for the hunter? Questions to ponder.

I was just making the point that some people argue that the .480 is not required for deer. I think a lot of people shoot both the .480 and .454 for deer because they want to, not because they need to. I definitely got my .480 because I wanted something a little different, not because I needed it. About 90% of handgun hunters would shoot .44's if it was all based purely on what is adequate for the job. At the end of the day, it comes down to shooting whatever makes you happy.

A .44 is adequate with some strict range limitations. I prefer to go a bit heavier because under the right conditions I can reach out further with my .454 or even better my .500 S&W. "A man has got to know his limitations" .

I think the .480 is very versatile. I have a custom Ruger Single Action in this caliber. It will launch a 400+ grainer at over 1300 fps. It will also send a 325 grain bullet over 1500 fps. My hand loads using the 275 gr speer does over 1600 fps is very acurate and great on deer. I took this year's buck with it at 60 yards. This load has not much more recoil than my friend's .44mag .For those of us with a small pocket book that can't afford a variety of guns....the .480 is great !
