Thought I saw a thread on this but can't find it. For whitetail hunting up to 100 yards and hogs out to maybe 50 yards would appreciate comments.
I gave my son a Contender 10" barrel in .223 about 10 or 12 years back he doesn't use it. Going to see if he will let me "borrow" it and if so plan to get one of those two barrels on it (with Leupold 4X) along with Decellerator grips and forearm piece.

Meant to add I don't reload and know 30-30 ammo would be easier to find but am thinking 7-30. Also can anyone comment on the velocity of the 7-30 Federal Hydra Shok 120 grain out of a 14" barrel?

Either will do fine. I would likely choose the 7-30. That is a very good little cartridge. Year before last I saw 2 different "big" red stags killed with 7-30s & factory 120 gr. The longest shot was about 100 yds. Thus, I believe it would be fine for your needs. (BTW - my longest kill with a single shot handgun was almost 300 yds. The cartridge was 7-30 Waters).

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

Charlie,

I have chronographed the factory 120 but do not have that info here at the office. My recollection is close to 2400. The 7-30 is very close in velocity to the performance of the 6.5 JDJ which obviously must be handloaded.

The above cited hunts were at the Y O Ranch. One of the stags was the largest or second largest taken with a handgun that year. He was a moose.

You'd be fine with either. At the distances you mentioned trajectory is not an issue. I'd lean to the 30-30 for a couple of reasons.
1) Ammo is everywhere.
2) 150's and 170's will handle deer, pigs and even elk if you hold correctly
3) if you don't handload the factory 30-30 is CHEAP in the fall. I've seen it going for $10 - $12 a box of 20 at Walmart.
4) If you do handload you'll find an amazing variety of bullets to chose from in the .308 bore. If you look around you can still find pulled military 147 Boat Tail FMJ for a nickle or less a piece (I just bought some from a small local gunshop). These are great for practice or loading down for small game.
