Hi guys I've been lurking for awhile. I've read the first 120 pages of posts in the last couple days. I'm hunting bears over bait at teh end of August in Maine. I've been here the past 2 years and shot a bear both years with a shotgun and my rifle. This year I'm using my .460 XVR 8 3/8" barrel with an eotec on it. It shoots everything pretty well. What is a good load that will get the job done on 350+ pound bears? I have a bunch of Hornandy 200 gr FTX but not everything I've read is positive. I don't reload yet so factory ammo only.
Thanks Guys

There are several companies who make cast bullets that would do the trick and Cor Bon(don't know about the spelling) probably makes a good jacketed bullet/factory load.

I have a bunch of Hornandy 200 gr FTX How big of a bear do you expect to shoot? You may be just fine with that.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Hoping to shoot one over 300. They're so hard to judge size. My main concern was I read in a few different places that the 200 FX was failing. It was seperating and not getting good penetration. I prefer to put a round thru the shoulders and dont want to lose a bear due to bullet failure.

325 gr. Cor Bon should handle any bear you will encounter.

Since you don`t reload one option would be Federals 460 load that uses a 300gr A-frame bullet running about 1750fps at the muzzle. The muzzle energy is listed at a little over 2000 which will be more then enough to take a Maine black bear. Good luck and good huntin.....

Thanks Guys. I have hornady 200 gr ftx, CorBon 395gr, Winchester Dual bonds. I'll test them out and see what shoots best. After that I'll shoot them into some wet paper to see what they do. I'm guessing it probably doesn't matter as long as i do my part and put the bullet where it needs to be.

Hey hunter; if you are still searching, we load the 325 grain Barnes Buster, 325 grain Swift A-Frame, 350 grain Hawk JSP/FN, Barnes 275 grain Solid XPB/HP and the General 275 grain Solid HP in the 460 S&W Mag. Give me a shout if you need further info/specs.
