We have a few ground hogs living under one of our out buildings. They wander out and raid the garden late in the afternoon. I caught this one before he could get back to his hole.

Gun is FA 454 loaded with 300 gr. XTP's and the shot was 36 steps. I think it may have been enough gun.

I had been practicing for a bear hunt this fall and it is what I had with me.

That'll teach 'em.

"Use enough gun" takes on a whole new meaning for me now.

Thanks for the comments.

Never did believe in the term "over kill"

There is another one that keeps slipping away that is so big a 454 may just make him mad! Summer time big game hunting at its finest.

I bet he won't do that again. Good job.

Lucky you got the drop on him; a sod poodle charge can be a harrowing experience to contend with. The only thing more dangerous would be to follow up on a wounded one in the green beans.

I'm starting to think maybe I WAS lucky to have gotten him with a little old 454 after all!! Anyone got a .475 to trade before I go after that other one?

He looks guilty and the trial I see will not be lengthy

Also headed to Maine. I will be leaving one week after you do. Good luck and leave one for me. I will be hunting with "Foggy Mountain Guide Service".

I'm going up with Hunters Point Guide Service. This is my 3rd year. Lots of bears. This is my first year using a handgun so I'm really looking forward to it. If all goes well, I'll post a success story and photos. I'm videoing my hunt again this year so possibly a link to that too. Good luck on your hunt. Shoot a big one buddy.
